WINCHESTER, Va. – The No. 12/16 Shenandoah University baseball team opened up its 2018 season Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep over Lancaster Bible.

The Hornets (2-0) were 1-0 winners in eight innings in the opener before taking the nightcap 9-1.

SU received a pair of solid performances from starting pitchers Colin Morse and Robert Klinchock in taking out the Chargers (0-2).

In the opener, Morse, the 2017 ODAC Pitcher of the Year, struck out nine, walked just one and allowed only two hits in 7.0 innings but came away with the no decision as the Hornets left seven men on base.

Junior Cole DuBois (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth, working around a one-out single by inducing a 4-3 double play, to earn the victory in his first SU appearance.

Sophomore Grant Thompson made DuBois the winner with a two-out single through the right side in the bottom of the eighth to plate the game's lone run.

Pinch runner Michael Cruz, on for designated hitter James Papeika, scored that run. Papeika reached on a one-out single before Cruz ran for him.

Papeika, Thompson and catcher Chase Smallwood all had two hits for the Hornets.

Shenandoah scored two runs in both the second and third, one each in the fourth and fifth and three in the sixth to give Klinchock (1-0) plenty of breathing room.

The junior struck out five, walked three and allowed the one run on three hits in 5.0 innings to pick up the victory.

Sophomore Seth Comer struck out in recording the final six outs to lock up the sweep.

Thompson continued his strong day with two RBI and one hit in three at-bats with Christian Rice getting two hits in two at-bats, driving in one run and scoring one.

Shenandoah continues this season-opening homestand with a 6 p.m. non-league doubleheader versus Misericordia Friday evening.
