WINCHESTER, Va. – The No. 12/16 Shenandoah University baseball team completed its opening week of the season Sunday afternoon with an 8-4 non-league win over Widener University.

Shenandoah (3-2) scored two runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the third to jump on Widener (2-2), but the Pride didn't go away.

Widener cut the deficit to just one run, 5-4, with two runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth off of SU starter Reeves Lowry and reliever Robert Klinchock.

The Hornets then gave themselves some breathing room with a single run in the seventh followed by a three-run eighth.

Junior Cole DuBois, the fifth Shenandoah hurler of the day, allowed one hit over the final two innings to earn his first save of the season.

With the tying run on third in the eighth, DuBois struck out Brennan Taylor looking to end the Widener threat.

Lowry (1-0) earned the win by allowing two runs on six hits and one walk in 5.0 innings of work. He also struck out two.

SU banged out 10 hits with Tristan Baker and James Papeika both getting two. Baker and Nick Goode each drove in a pair of runs, the former on singles in the first and seventh and the latter on a sacrifice fly in the third and a double down the left field line in the eighth.

Luke Nussman, Chase Smallwood and Robert Marcelle all had one hit and drove in one run.

Widener starter Matthew Guarino (0-1) took the loss. He gave up four runs on five hits and two walks in 6.0 innings.

Shenandoah continues this homestand on Tuesday with a 3:30 non-league contest versus Mary Washington.
