Sauget, Ill. – After picking up their first win of the season earlier in the day, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars took to the field at GCS Credit Union Ballpark one final time to close out the opening weekend. The Cougars used a big five run third inning to open up a 7-0 lead and then got five innings of scoreless relief work from the bullpen to seal the 7-3 win over Webster University.

For the Cougars (2-1), Brady Roberts went 2-5, scoring twice to lead the offense. Cody Caballero went four innings allowing three runs on the mound. Alex Meyers picked up the win going three innings while striking out four. In total the Cougar bullpen allowed just four hits on the night over five innings of work and didn't surrender a run.

For the Gorloks (1-2), Danny Strohm led the offense going 3-4 while driving in two. Kyler Kent also went 2-4. The Webster bullpen was equally as impressive as the Cougars, allowing just one unearned run in six and two thirds innings of work.

The Cougars bats woke up in the second inning. After a Kevin Coppin walk, Roberts roped a 0-1 pitch down the left field line to put two in scoring position. An RBI groundout by Keegan Tyrell and a RBI on a fielders' choice by Jose Mercado allowed CUC to take a 2-0 lead.

CUC added on with a big fourth inning. With one out, Andrew Massey doubled off the left field wall. Mitch Wilson followed by trading places with him on a double down the right field line. Coppin and Roberts singled and a walk loaded the bases again. Matt Fauth then brought home two with a single through the right side to make it 6-0, and a groundout by Bryan VanDuser brought home the fifth run of the inning.

Webster got themselves back in the game with a three run fourth inning. The first two batters reached via a hit and a hit by pitch. One out later a walk loaded the bases, and a hit back up the middle deflected off of Caballero allowing two to score. A sac fly brought home the third run of the inning to make it 7-3 CUC.

The Cougars added one more in the ninth on a wild pitch. After the fourth inning, Meyers, Abelardo Paz Agudelo and Noah Dressler combined to give up just four hits while striking out seven to shut the door on Webster by a final score of 8-3

The Cougars will now ready for their annual trip south to Florida. CUC will kick off the six game trip on Sunday against Heidelberg University. Opening pitch is set for 1:00pm.
