MOUNT BERRY, Georgia — The Marietta College baseball team opened the 2018 season with a 4-1 win over Berry College Friday (Mar. 2) afternoon at William R. Bowdoin Field. While the Pioneers were playing their first game, the Vikings fell to 7-4 on the season.

The Etta Express jumped on berry starting pitcher Trey Rampy in the top of the first inning. Connor Golden reached on a one-out single to center.

Back-to-back doubles from Mike Hale and Shane Fetsko gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead with runners at second and third. Damian Yenzi knocked in Hale when he reached on an error by the Berry first baseman.

That was the all the run support Pioneer starting pitcher Scott Oberhelman would need. Oberhelman (1-0) scattered three hits and allowed one unearned run in the win. He walked one and struck out four in 6.0 innings of work

Kordell Antill tossed an inning of shutout relief before turning the ball over to closer David Stover. Stover threw 2.0 perfect innings for the save.

Marietta added a run in the fifth when Chris Petrucci led off with a walk and stole second. He came around to score on a single off from Yenzi.

Berry got on the board in the seventh. Quinn Smith led off with a double chasing Oberhelman. An error and a bunt single loaded the bases with no outs. Antill induced a double play allowing Smith to score.

Fetsko drove in an insurance run in the ninth with his fourth hit of the day. Golden reached on a base hit bunt and stole second. Hale singled to left moving Golden to third. Ftesko followed with a single to left plating Golden.

Fetsko was 4-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in. Golden was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while Hale went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double. Freshman Eddie Poster was 2-for-4 with a double in his collegiate debut.

Rampy (2-1) took the loss. He worked 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Milan Sutaria threw 3.0 innings and was charged with one run on six hits.

Marietta plays Emory University at Berry Saturday (Mar. 3). First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m.
