Seventh Inning Foils Rowan Baseball In 10-5 Defeat At Arcadia

GLASSBORO, NJ – Visiting Arcadia University scored six runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Rowan University baseball team, 10-5 on Tuesday. The game was called after eight innings due to darkness.

 

The 25th-ranked Profs suffer their first loss of the year and have a 3-1 record. The Knights improve to 2-1 overall.

 

Arcadia center fielder Bryan Gillen (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) went three-for-five with two doubles and two runs scored. Shortstop Josh Fulmer (fr. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and right fielder/first baseman Phil Pierfy (so. Easton, PA/Wilson Area) each tallied two hits. Fulmer totaled two doubles, one RBI and one run while Pierfy added a double and two RBIs. Left fielder Sean Carew (jr. Northfield, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) knocked in two runs and scored one time. Designated hitter Nick Cardace (sr. Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) and first baseman Brett Moyer (fr. Telford, PA/Souderton Area) crossed the plate two times apiece.

 

Right-hander Andrew Scholz (so. West Orange, NJ/West Orange) tossed the final four innings for the win (1-1). He surrendered one run on four hits and struck out three. Righty Justin Smith (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) took the loss (0-1).

 

For Rowan, center fielder Dan Shane (jr. Perkasie, PA/Pennridge), third baseman Dillon Mendel (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and catcher Steven Hewa (jr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) each produced two hits. Shane had two doubles and two RBIs while Hewa posted a double, two RBIs and one run. Mendel scored twice. Left fielder Monny Strickland (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and right fielder Kyle Golla (sr. Palm Coast, FL/Allentown (NJ)) touched home one time apiece.

 

The Profs were ahead 5-4 entering the seventh inning. After a lead-off walk, Fulmer hit a run-scoring double to right center to tie the contest. Gillen doubled to put runners at second and third. Third baseman Luke Hohenstein (jr. Stroudsberg, PA/Pocono Mountain E.) walked to load the bases. A hit by pitch followed by another walk forced in two runs to give the Knights a 7-5 advantage. Carew then executed a squeeze play with two runs coming home and a third scoring on an error.

 

Arcadia opened the game with three runs in the first. Gillen doubled down the right field line with one out, advanced to third on a groundout then scored on an error. Moyer singled and Carew was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pierfy doubled to left, plating two runs. Rowan got on the board in the second when Mendel led off with a base hit through the left side and later came home on a miscue.

 

In the fourth, Carew began the frame with a base hit then went to second on a wild pitch. He advanced to third then scored on a pair of errors, making the score 4-1. The Profs evened the game in the bottom half of the inning. Strickland reached on an error and Mendel had an infield single. They were brought home on Hewa's double to right. With two outs, Shane doubled to left center and Hewa raced home with the tying run. Rowan took the lead in the sixth when Shane hit a double to left and Golla touched the plate.

 

The Profs begin their trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational versus Salve Regina University on Friday, March 9 at 3 p.m.
