NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The freshly-minted 22nd-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team picked up it's 10th win of the season on Tuesday, dropping Bridgewater College on a neutral field in Myrtle Beach, S.C., 11-1. Senior Logan Harrelson struck out nine batters in 5.0 innings to pick up the win while Brandon Ginch and Nicholas Baham each blasted home runs for the offense.
Harrelson continued his red hot start to the season with five clean frames against the Eagles, allowing just three hits while continuing to limit free passes with only one hit-by-pitch and no walks. He matched his season-high with nine K's and now has an 8:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio for the year with 32 whiffs and only four walks.
He hit his groove early with an inning-ending double play in the first and three strikeouts in the second inning. After CNU got on the board in the top of the third, Harrelson quickly got his team back to the dugout with a nine-pitch bottom half, striking out another. A single led off the fourth, but again the tough right-hander responded by striking out the side, including a pair of backwards K's. In his final inning of work, he struck out the first two batters he faced before giving up his third hit of the afternoon, all singles, and induced an inning-ending lineout.
On the mound for his fourth start of the season, Harrelson improved to 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA. He has allowed just two runs in 24.0 innings of work while striking out 32 batters.
The CNU offense got moving in the top of the third when Conner Clark beat out an infield single with one out and promptly stole second base. Junior third baseman Conner Clark drove a single through the left side and Clark scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Ginch. With two outs and Ginch on first, Baham stepped in and blistered an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for his fourth round-tripper of the season.
The Captains added four runs in the top of the fifth with a very similar script. Clark walked and Woodard followed with a double. After Ginch was hit-by-pitch, Baham picked up his third and fourth RBI's of the day with a single into center field. Craig Johnson followed with an RBI single to right to chase the starting pitcher, and Nick DiNapoli added a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring in the inning.
Errors hampered Bridgewater in the sixth, when CNU tacked on three more runs despite just one hit. A pair of Captains reached via errors and Austin Henry would come around to score on a third. With Clark standing on third base and two outs, Ginch stepped in and smashed his fourth home run of the season to put the Captains ahead, 10-0.
A solo shot in the bottom of the sixth would get the Eagles on the board, as pinch hitter Jacob Grabeel hit his first career dinger, but it would be all the offense Bridgewater could muster against the Captains' pitching staff. Austin Slough tossed the sixth with a pair of strikeouts followed by shutout innings from Kyle Darmstead, Jaret West, and Logan Aylor, to clean up the 11-1 victory. Each of the last three relievers had one strikeout without giving up a hit.
Ginch led the way with a 2-for-2 performance including his HR, with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Baham was 2-for-3 with a walk and 4 RBI while Woodard added three hits to extend his season-opening hitting streak to 14 games. Craig Johnson added a pair of hits and the Captains also showed a proficient eye at the plate with six walks as a team.
Christopher Newport will take on Hampden-Sydney College in Wednesday afternoon's action at the Ripken Complex in Myrtle Beach. Game time is set for 10:00 am.
