LOS ANGELES — Will Martel looked outstanding as the Occidental baseball team knocked off No. 8 Centenary (La.) 4-1 at Anderson Field on Monday.
Martel, a junior lefty from San Anselmo who was an All-SCIAC and All-West Region selection two years ago, had great command of his stuff, throwing a complete game. He gave up just four hits, one walk and one earned run and was very economical with his pitches, throwing less than 100.
When Centenary players made contact, the Tigers made great plays behind Martel, including a diving catch for the final out by Bryan Smith.
Michael Netzel led the way offensively for Oxy, going 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Eamon McNeil went 1 for 4 with an RBI, Bryan Smith went 1 for 3 with a run scored and Jared Baur went 1 for 3.
Oxy scored three of its runs in the fourth and added an insurance run in the seventh.
Oxy improves to 8-6 overall.
It's the first game of a Monday doubleheader and third of nine games during Spring Break. The Tigers are back in action Monday afternoon against Vassar at 2:30 p.m.
