Strong pitching leads baseball over Immaculata

DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College baseball team picked up a 4-1 win over the Immaculata Mighty Macs on Friday. 

After a scoreless four and a half innings, Wesley got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Kevin Schmitt singled through the right side to score John Joines from second base. 

Wesley then put three runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Michael Piccirillo. Michael Piccirillo hit a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Chris Seibert. After a double by Jordan Marucci, he scored on a throwing error by the Immaculata left fielder. Will Barton brought Jarrett Wallace around to score their third run of the inning on an RBI single to left field.

Immaculata got a run across in the seventh inning but the Wesley relievers shut down the Immaculata bats in the final two innings for the win.

Sam Meck pitched six shutout innings with three strikeouts and only allowing three hits and a walk for his second win of the season. Mike Sabino and Connor Springsteen pitched the eighth and the ninth innings without allowing a run. Springsteen struck out the side to earn his 100th career strikeout and second save of 2018.

Will Barton and John Joines both collected multi-hit days for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines (3-5) will be back in action tomorrow when they host the Neumann Knights in a doubleheader. The first game is set for a 12 p.m. start from Bob Reed Field.
