Cortland Splits SUNYAC-Opening Doubleheader vs. Brockport

LEXINGTON, S.C. - Cortland pitchers held Brockport scoreless in 14 out of 16 innings, but a four-run fifth inning by the Golden Eagles in game two was enough to earn a 4-3 win and a SUNYAC doubleheader split over 10th-ranked Cortland. The Red Dragons (8-6, 1-1 SUNYAC) won the first game, 5-3, in the league opener for both teams at Lexington County Stadium.
 
The rubber game of the three-game league series is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m.
 
Patrick Schetter (Beacon) had a fifth-inning single in the first game to extend his hit streak to 24 and a tie for second in Cortland history, but he was held hitless in game two to conclude the streak.
 
 
GAME 1: Cortland 5, Brockport 3
 
Antonio Pragana (Hopewell Junction / John Jay) had five hits and singled in the winning runs in the bottom of the eighth as Cortland opened up SUNYAC play with a dramatic win over Brockport, 5-3. Pragana was 5-for-5 with two RBI and a stolen base.
 
Tied 3-3 in the eighth, consecutive walks by Garrett Heaton (East Patchogue/Bellport) and Paul Dondero (East Islip) followed by a Matt Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) set up the bases loaded situation for Pragana, who delivered the tie-breaking hit.
 
Michalski opened the scoring for Cortland in the third inning with a two-run single and scored two batters later on a Colin BeVard (Syracuse/West Genesee) RBI single to make the score 3-0.
 
Brockport tied it with their three runs in the sixth inning when two walks and a hit batter set up their own bases-loaded situation before Josh Cosgrove drove in one with a single. A double play one batter later scored Brockport's second run, and a wild pitch brought in the equalizer.
 
Christian Dufresne (Cocoa, FL/Space Coast) pitched five innings for Cortland and exited after allowing consecutive walks to lead off the sixth. He was charged with Brockport's first two runs. He struck out eight Golden Eagles hitters and walked three.
 
Steven Salisbury (Cranston, RI/Moses Brown) was the winning pitcher for Cortland in relief. In four innings he allowed one run and two hits while striking out three and surrendering two walks.  
 
Mark Giallanzo started for Brockport and pitched five and two thirds innings, surrendering three runs. He allowed 10 hits but had no walks and three strikeouts.
 
GAME 2: Brockport 4, Cortland 3
 
Tom Kretzler's bases clearing triple in the fourth highlighted Brockport's four-run inning en route to the comeback victory and doubleheader split.
 
Sam McCumiskey pitched a complete game in the seven-inning contest for Brockport. He surrendered three runs on just four hits while striking out four and walking three.
 
Cortland struck first in the third inning on a Matthew Personius (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) two-run home run. Personius was 2-for-3 with all three Cortland RBI.
 
Personius had his third RBI on a single in the fifth to cut the deficit to one, but Cortland left two runners on and McCumiskey retired the final seven Red Dragons in a row to seal the victory.  
 
Cortland starter Isiah Hudson (Hyde Park/FDR) allowed one run on five hits with one strikeout over four and two thirds innings in a no decision.
 
Justin Valentio went 3-for-3 and Liam O'Leary was 2-for-3 for Brockport (5-7, 1-1 SUNYAC).
