LEXINGTON, S.C. - Mike Harrington (Glens Falls) pitched seven innings of one-run ball as Cortland (9-6, 2-1 SUNYAC) defeated Brockport (5-7, 1-2 SUNYAC), 5-1, to take the third game of a three-game SUNYAC weekend series at Lexington County Stadium.
Harrington allowed only three hits and two walks with four strikeouts for his second win of the season. Jake Casey (Homer) pitched two innings of hitless relief as Red Dragon pitchers held Brockport scoreless in 22 out of 25 innings in the series.
Colin BeVard (Syracuse / West Genesee) led the Red Dragons with a run-scoring double in the fourth and an RBI triple in the sixth. He finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Cortland took the lead 2-0 in the first. Patrick Schetter (Beacon) hit a two-out RBI double, and he scored one batter later on Justin Teague's (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) single down the left field line. Teague, Antonio Pragana (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) and Marcos Perivolaris (Mattituck) each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Red Dragons.
Brockport starter Alex Brown took the loss. In three and two thirds innings he allowed four runs on seven hits while surrendering three walks and notching two strikeouts.
BeVard's double in the fourth extended Cortland's lead to three before Matthew Personius (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) singled him in one batter later to give the Red Dragons a 4-0 advantage.
Brockport's lone run came in the sixth on a Tom Kretzler two-out single, which scored Charlie Serino to briefly shrink the deficit to three, but BeVard's triple in the bottom of the sixth regained Cortland's four-run advantage.
Casey allowed a base runner to reach via base on balls in both the eighth and ninth innings, but struck out two batters and executed a pick off to aid his effort to preserve the win.
The game was delayed nearly three hours from its original start time of 10 a.m. due to rain. With the completion of Cortland's seven-game stint in Lexington, the Red Dragons are scheduled to return home to host Ithaca College in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday at 3 p.m., weather and field conditions permitting.
