Marietta sweeps OAC doubleheader at Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio — Marietta College swept an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Heidelberg University Monday (April 2) afternoon in Peaceful Valley. The Etta Express won game one, 6-1, and then posted a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.

Marietta, ranked 18th in the ABCA Coaches Poll and 19th in the D3baseball.com Top-25, improves to 14-4 overall and 3-1 in the OAC. Heidelberg, ranked 26th in the ABCA poll, slips to 13-6 on the season and 2-2 in conference play.

Senior Scott Oberhelman (2-1) threw 7.0 strong innings to get his second win of the season. He scattered five hits and allowed one run while striking out five Berg hitters. David Stover retired six of the seven batters he faced in the final 2.0 innings including a pair of strikeouts.

With Oberhelman keeping the Heidelberg offense in check, Marietta scored five runs in the first two innings off of Heidelberg starter Cameron Deemer to take control of the game. Deemer entered the game with a 5-0 record and 1.80 earned run average.

The Pioneers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first inning. Connor Golden drove in MC's first run when he reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Chris Petrucci to score. With runners on the corners, Marietta executed the double steal as Golden stole second and Shane Fetsko stole home for a 2-0 Pioneers lead.

A defensive miscue by the Heidelberg third baseman proved costly in the second inning. With one out, Michael Barnabei reached on the error and moved to second base on a base hit by Seamus Kenneally. Geoff Snyder followed with a single to center field scoring Barnabei.

Petrucci singled to load the bases for Fetsko. Fetsko delivered Marietta's fourth straight single plating Kenneally. Mike Hale made it 5-0 with a sac fly to right field that allowed Snyder to tag and score.

Deemer (5-1) took the loss after allowing six runs, four earned, on 10 hits. He walked one and struck out four. Anthony Hajdu worked the last 3.0 innings and gave up one hit while striking out two Pioneers.

Petrucci extended the Pioneer lead to 6-0 in the sixth inning. Kenneally was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Snyder sacrificed him into scoring position and Petrucci followed with an RBI single to center.

Heidelberg finally got on the board with a solo home run off the bat of Darrin Shirk in the bottom of the sixth. Shirk finished 2-for-3 with a double and home run.

Fetsko went 3-for-4 to lead Marietta. Synder and Petrucci had two hits apiece, while Kenneally scored twice.

In the second game, Heidelberg got back-to-back-to-back two-out doubles from Evan Long, Matt Psychas and Kyle Slovick to take a 2-0 lead in the third inning.

Hale cut the Berg lead in half with an RBI single in the sixth. Petrucci led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Hale followed with a single to left center plating Petrucci.

Hale struck again in the eighth inning launching a three-run home run over the left field wall putting the Pioneers in front, 4-2.

Snyder added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth with a two-run single to right center.

Barnabei (2-0) got the win with 4.0 innings of shutout relief. Ian Luttrell started and worked 5.0 innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Freshman Dalton Wiggins started the sixth inning on the mound for Marietta and gave up hits to the first two Berg hitters. Pioneer skipper Brian Brewer elected to put Barnabei on the mound and he retired the next three Student Princes to get out of the inning unscathed. Barnabei allowed two hits and struck out three for the win.

Trevor Adkins started on the mound for Heidelberg and gave up one run on six hits. He walked four and struck out seven. Joey Wenning (1-1) took the loss after giving up three runs on just one hit in 2.0 innings. Sam Ankrom and Alex Sir Louis pitched in the ninth inning.

Hale finished 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBI and one run scored. Snyder had two hits and two RBI, while Petrucci added two hits and scored twice.

Marietta hosts Ohio Wesleyan University on Thursday (April 5) for a single, nine-inning nonconference game. First pitch at Don Schaly Stadium is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
