#2 Rowan Stunned By Stockton, 3-2

GLASSBORO, NJ – Stockton University recorded the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to humble the Rowan University baseball team, 3-2 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Friday.

 

The Profs have a 16-3 record and they are 2-2 in the conference. The Ospreys are 4-12 overall with a 1-3 NJAC mark. Rowan is ranked first in the American Baseball Coaches Association rankings and second in the D3baseball.com Top 25.

 

The score was even at two entering the ninth. Catcher David Mann (so. Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) reached on a fielder's choice and there was one out. Mann advanced to second on a walk and went to third on a wild pitch. After another walk loaded the bases, second baseman Mike DeSenzo (so. Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Mann came home to put Stockton ahead 3-2. Rowan put a runner on with two outs but a strikeout ended the contest.

 

DeSenzo ended the game three-for-four with a double, one RBI and one run. Center fielder Rico Viani (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) tallied two hits (four at bats) and a double. First baseman John Perrino (fr. Wall, NJ/Wall) and designated hitter Garrhet Reedy (so. Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth) each drove in one run. Shortstop Tyler Hobbs (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) crossed the plate one time.

 

Left-hander Zach Fillmore (fr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) pitched 1.2 innings in relief for the win. He (2-1) did not allow a hit. Righty Ray Hughes (jr. Forked River, NJ/Lacey Twp.) threw the ninth for his first save. Right-hander Justin Smith (jr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) suffered the loss (0-2).

 

Profs' first baseman Dillon Mendel (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) went two-for-three with a double and one run. Designated hitter Shawn Leydon (sr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) and third baseman Justin Provost (fr. Hackettstown, NJ/Pope John XXIII) knocked in one run apiece. Provost also hit a double. Shortstop Nick Schooley (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had one run scored.

 

The Ospreys opened the scoring in the first. DeSenzo began the game with a double to left center and later scored on a fielder's choice. Rowan tied it in the second. Mendel doubled to left center and came home on Provost's double. The Profs went ahead 2-1 in the third. Schooley recorded a leadoff single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He touched the plate on Leydon's groundout. Stockton made it 2-2 in the fifth. Hobbs had a base hit to left center. Viani's single put runners at first and second. Perrino followed with a base knock to left center and Hobbs scored the tying run.

 

Next, the baseball team hosts Montclair State University for a conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 8 at 11:30 a.m.
