The University of Scranton baseball team could not warm up its bats on a cold day at Volpe Field, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to St. John Fisher, 2-1 and 7-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The Royals (8-8) outhit the Cardinals (14-7) in the opener, but lost tight ballgame. St. John Fisher broke things open in game two with six runs over the final three innings.
Game 1 – St. John Fisher 2, Scranton 1
Sophomore righty Bobby Hegarty (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) took a perfect game into the sixth inning before St. John Fisher broke through. A leadoff double broke up the perfect game and the Cardinals plated two runs on a two-run double later in the inning.
Scranton struck back for a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by junior third baseman Ian McIntosh (Newtown, Pa./La Salle College H.S.). But the Royals were unable to push across a tying run the rest of the inning or in the seventh.
Hegarty went the distance, taking the hard-luck loss after allowing two runs on two hits while striking out two. McIntosh finished with three hits, a stolen base and an RBI, senior right fielder Chase Standen (Newtown Square, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) singled twice, a run scored and a stolen base, and senior second baseman Brad Schneider (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) doubled.
Game 2 – St. John Fisher 7, Scranton 1
The Cardinals scored a run in the fourth to take the lead, but Scranton tied it up in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by senior third baseman Seth Bower (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown).
St. John Fisher retook the lead in the seventh with a run, then added three in the eighth and two in the ninth.
Sophomore first baseman Kevin Haag (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining/Bridgton Academy) singled, doubled and scored a run. Junior Pat Rohr (Audubon, Pa./Devon Prep) worked the first 5 2/3 innings, allowing a run on four hits and four walks while striking out three.
The Royals will be back in action on Monday when they shot Marywood at 5 p.m at Volpe Field.
