Atlanta, Ga., April 7, 2018 – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team rallied for five runs in the final two innings against Emory University but was unable to overcome the Eagles lead as it fell 8-6 Saturday in its sixth University Athletic Association (UAA) game of the season.

The Bears overall record now stands at 14-11 including 3-3 in the UAA. Emory is now 12-13 overall with a 3-3 record in the UAA.  Freshman Johnny LaMantia hit a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs to help close the gap to a single run. LaMantia's home run is the first of the season for the Bears.

WashU's three, four and five hitters all had multi-hit games as sophomore John Brinkman led the team with three hits. Sophomores Thomas Gardner and John Ostrander had two hits apiece.

Freshman Ryan Loutos (4-3) took the loss after five innings pitched allowing five runs. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead scoring five runs within the first two innings of play.

WashU loaded the bases in the third inning and capitalized with a run scoring single by Brinkman to cut Emory's lead to 5-1, but were unable to score again until the eighth.

After three consecutive singles by Brinkman, Gardner and Ostrander, LaMantia came to the plate with two outs. He took three consecutive balls out of the zone before a strike. The next pitch he sent sailing over the right field wall for his first career homer to bring the Bears within one, 6-5.

The Eagles added two runs to their lead in the bottom of the eighth which proved to be the difference, as freshman Collin Kahal was able to score on a two-out single by Brinkman in the top of the ninth.

Emory's Jack Moore (2-4) was credited with the victory and Jared Gaer earned the save by inducing the final four outs of the contest.
