Baseball Opens Conference Slate with Sweep against Yeshiva

HARRISON, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team opened the 2017 Skyline Conference portion of its schedule with a two-game sweep over the Yeshiva Maccabees on Friday afternoon at Silver Lake Park. The Privateers won game one by a 13-0 score and followed that up with a 13-3 win.
 
Maritime was led by freshman Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, N.Y./Poly Prep) on the day as he had six hits in seven at bats with a walk and two stolen bases. Zurita also scored a team-high four runs on the day while driving in four runs over the 14-inning stretch. Sophomore Antonio Diaz(Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) had four hits and drove in a pair, while freshman Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Chaminade) had four RBIs on the afternoon.
 
Senior Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) waned four times, stole a base and scored four runs, while junior Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) had three hits and scored three runs. Senior Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) had two hits and scored a pair, while sophomore Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) added a single and a double to go along with three runs scored. Senior Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) was 3-for-8 on the day with a triple and two runs scored while driving in a pair, with classmate Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's) driving in three runs and scoring one on the day.
 
Also getting in on the offensive action was sophomore Dan Sinisi (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) with a double in his only at bat of the day, along with freshman Matt Eng (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood), who collected his first career hit. Sophomore Jake Vera (Plainview, N.Y./Bethpage) was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while freshman Zach Baber (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) added a two-run home run for his first career hit and. Sophomore Joe Cordero (Franklin Square, N.Y./Kellenberg) also added a single, while junior John Verwoert (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) and freshman Adam Mosca (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) both got a pair of at bats.
 
On the hill Maritime sent sophomore Brady Dolan (York, Pa./Northeastern) to the bump, and he pitched very well striking out a career-high 11 batters, which was third most in a single-game by a Maritime pitcher since the 2005 season. Dolan allowed just one hit over 5 2/3 innings while walking a pair. Freshman Kyle Peterson (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) came on to close out the game as he struck out three of the four batters he faced.
 
In game two junior Sean McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) got the start and allowed two runs over three innings of work before freshman Kevin Dunn (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) came on. Dunn struck out six batters over his three innings of relief as he recorded his first career win. Freshman Keegan McDonald (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) pitched the bottom of the seventh inning and let up one run but struck out a pair over his inning of work.
 
Game 1 Recap
Maritime jumped out early as Scerra walked on four pitches before Deddo sent a triple to centerfield to score the game's first run. Costleigh then picked up an RBI as he hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Deddo.
 
Dolan cruised through the bottom of the first, striking out two in the inning before Maritime plated three runs in the top of the second as Zurita and Deddo collected RBI hits, while Zurita scored on an error to make the score 5-0.
 
Maritime added a sixth run in the next inning as Zurita singled to bring home Schiavoni. The Privateers added five runs in the fourth inning as Costleigh had another sacrifice fly, followed by a run-scoring single by Diaz, and a sacrifice fly by Sullivan. Zurita capped off the inning with a two-run single to give Maritime an 11-0 lead.
 
The Privateers added two more runs on a two-run home run off the bat of Baber in the top of the fifth to cap off the scoring at 13.
 
Dolan made his way through the bottom of the fifth and got two outs in the bottom of the sixth before Peterson came on and got a groundout. Peterson then struck out a side of pinch hitters in the bottom of the seventh to cap off the win.
 
Game 2 Recap
In the second game Maritime got off to another quick start as Scerra singled followed by a run-scoring double off the bat of Costleigh. Yeshiva touched up McQuail for two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-1 lead.
 
Sullivan walked to lead off the top of the third and moved up on a balk and wild pitch. Scerra picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly to even the game at two, before Diaz singled home Costleigh but was erased trying to stretch his single into a double.
 
Maritime got the offense going with a three-run fourth inning as Zurita scored on a throwing error after stealing third base. Russo had a run-scoring double after Alwan walked and stole second before Sullivan brought Russo home with an RBI groundout to increase the Privateer lead to 6-2.
 
Dunn came on for the bottom of the fourth and struck out two of the first three batters he faced as he set down the side in order. Dunn then struck out another two Maccabees in the bottom of the fifth to bring up the Privateers in the top of the sixth inning.
 
Zurita, Alwan and Russo walked to load the bases in the top of the sixth before Vera singled to plate a pair. The next batter was Sullivan, who grounded into a double play but Russo crossed the plate to give Maritime a 9-2 advantage.
 
Maritime capped off the game with a four-run seventh inning as Diaz reached on an error followed by a wild pitch to move him up to second. Zurita singled and stole second to put a pair in scoring position ahead of Alwan's walk to load the bases. Vera singled to left to make it 10 runs for Maritime, followed by a two-run double off the bat of Sullivan to put Maritime ahead 12-2. Schiavoni rounded out the inning with an RBI groundout to cap off the offensive output at 13 runs.
 
In the bottom of the seventh McDonald came on and hit the first batter he faced, who later came around to score. However, McDonald settled down and retired his final two batters faced via strikeout.
 
Maritime (7-4, 2-0 Skyline) will finally make its long-awaited Reinhart Field debut on Sunday afternoon, when the Privateers host the Baruch Bearcats for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
 
Yeshiva (0-4, 0-2 Skyline) will host Mount St. Vincent on Sunday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m. at Palisades Park in New Jersey.
