Baseball Drops Pair at Home to St. Joseph’s (LI)

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team dropped a pair of home games on Sunday afternoon to the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles by the scores of 4-3 and 13-9 on the Reinhart Baseball Field.
 
Sophomore Antonio Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) was 5-for-9 and hit .556 to lead the team and also had a team-high three RBIs on the afternoon. Senior Chris Deddo(Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) was 2-for-6 and walked three times with two RBIs, while seniors Stephen Semler(Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington)Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and freshman Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Chaminade) each had two RBIs on the afternoon.
 
On the mound Maritime sent senior Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) to the hill for the opener as he allowed one earned run on seven hits while striking out three hitters over six innings of work. Freshman Kyle Peterson (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) threw two scoreless innings in game one, before junior Matthew Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) pitched the finals two frames in the ninth and tenth innings of the opening contest.
 
Freshman Dylan Clausen (Southold, N.Y./Southold) started game two and went four innings for the Privateers before sophomore Skylar Graff (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) struck out three of the five batters he retired. Junior A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) went 1 1/3 innings to close out the second game of the doubleheader.
 
Game 1 Recap
In game one D'Ancona allowed a leadoff single but got a double-play to get the first two outs before striking out the fifth batter of the inning to strand a pair on base. The Privateer offense gave Maritime the lead as Deddo reached on a one-out walk followed by a walk by freshman Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, N.Y./Poly Prep). Two batters later Diaz connected on a base hit to left centerfield to chase home the first two runs of the contest.
 
D'Ancona cruised into the fifth inning and ran into a hiccup as the Golden Eagles touched him up for two runs as St. Joseph's evened the game at two.
 
After D'Ancona got through the sixth inning, Peterson came on and struck out two batters in the top of the seventh. Peterson added another strikeout and picked off a batter in the top of the eighth inning with the game still tied.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, Costleigh worked the count full and then launched a long home run to left field to give the Privateers the lead. In the top of the ninth St. Joseph's tied the game with a solo home to bring up the Privateers in the bottom of the ninth.
 
In the bottom of the ninth Semler singled and Sullivan walked ahead of senior John Verwoert (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet), who singled to load the bases with two outs. Maritime was unable to collect the big hit as the game went to extra innings. In the top of the tenth the Golden Eagles picked up one more run to move ahead by a 4-3 score.
 
Deddo got on first with a pop single, but was erased as he was caught stealing. Two batters later junior Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) walked but it was not enough as the Privateers fell by the 4-3 score in 10 innings.
 
Game 2 Recap
In the second game Clausen was handed the ball and allowed a leadoff single before striking out the next three batters to bring up the Privateer bats.
 
Costleigh walked on four pitches before Deddo sent his first home run of the season over the left centerfield fence to give Maritime a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) singled followed by a base hit by Zurita to put runners at the corner. Diaz singled to plate one and put the Privateers up by three. Freshman Zach Baber (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) walked to load the bases before the Golden Eagle starter was lifted after getting just one out.
 
Sullivan worked the count full and singled up the middle to bring home two and give Maritime a five-run lead. Two batters later Costleigh picked up a hit to plate one, before Deddo walked to load the bases once again. Russo then walked on a 3-1 pitch to pick up an RBI to cap off Maritime's crooked number at seven.
 
After St. Joseph's got two runs back in the top of the second, Maritime responded with another two run inning as Diaz singled to lead off the frame ahead of Semler's two-run home run to right centerfield as Maritime bumped its lead back to seven at 9-2.
 
In the top of the fourth inning the Golden Eagles chipped back at the Privateer lead with four runs on seven hits to make the score 9-6. St. Joseph's added two more in the fifth to pull back within one before tying the game in the sixth inning with an unearned run. In the top of the seventh the Golden Eagles loaded the bases with three singles ahead of a grand slam to right field to take its first lead of the game at 13-9.
 
Baber crushed a double to left centerfield to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but Maritime was unable to mount the comeback, falling to St. Joseph's by a 13-9 score.
 
Maritime (11-7. 4-2 Skyline) will be back in action with a non-conference game on Tuesday evening as the Privateers play host to first-year program New Rochelle beginning at 7 p.m. on the Reinhart Baseball Field.
 
St. Joseph's (LI) (6-7, 2-0 Skyline) will be on the road for a non-conference game at Kean on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
