MARIETTA, Ohio — Denison University scored an unearned run in the top of the tenth inning to beat Marietta College, 10-9, Saturday (April 14) in nonconference baseball action. The Pioneers fall to 18-6 overall, while Denison improves to 19-6 on the season.
The Big Red jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a run in the first and six more in the third off of Pioneer starter Scott Oberhelman. All six of Denison's runs in the third inning came with two outs. Sam Frazen had an RBI triple to get the rally started and Vince Walker finished it off with a two-run home run.
Marietta battled back and took the lead with an eight-run fourth. Just like Denison, all of the Pioneers' runs came with two outs. MC had eight hits in the inning including five in a row. Mike Hale smacked a two-run double, while Damian Yenzi had a two-run single.
Denison tied the game with a run in the sixth and then took the lead, 9-8, with a run in the seventh. DU carried that one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth inning.
Hale led off the home half of the ninth with a single through the left side of the infield. Yenzi walked and Brady Cottom sacrificed both runners into scoring position. Denison intentionally walked Zack Ward to load the bases and set up the inning-ending double play.
Connor Golden was called on to pinch hit with the bases full of Pioneers. He hit a soft grounder up the middle that allowed Hale to score and tie the game, 9-9. Denison tried to get Ward at second base but he beat the throw. However, Ward thought he was called out and headed for the third base dugout allowing the DU shortstop to tag him out. A strikeout ended the MC rally and sent the game into extra innings.
Pinch hitter Max Lahn led off the tenth with a single. Walker followed with a fly ball to left that was misplayed by Marietta giving Denison runners at first and second with no outs on the error.
Noah Hahn dropped down the sac bunt moving both runners up 90 feet. With the Pioneer infield playing in, Nick Pettigrew hot a chopper to third and Yenzi's only play was to first base allowing Lahn to score the go ahead run.
Marietta got a leadoff single from Geoff Snyder in the bottom of the tenth. But Taylor Perrett retired the next three Pioneers for the save.
Mikey Rivera (1-1) picked up the win with 5.0 innings of relief. He allowed one run on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Perrett threw the tenth and notched his first save of the season.
