CORTLAND, N.Y. - Seven Cortland pitchers, led by starter Andrew Barnes (Rochester, NH/Spaulding), combined to scatter eight hits and Colin BeVard (Syracuse/West Genesee) hit a three-run double to spark a five-run second inning as the nationally sixth-ranked Red Dragons defeated visiting Utica College, 8-3, in a non-league game recently added to the schedule.

Cortland won its 18th straight game and improved to 26-6. The Red Dragons' game Friday at New Paltz has been moved to Sunday due to the weather forecast. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon and a single game Sunday at a time to be announced.

Barnes earned the victory as part of a Cortland predetermined rotation. He allowed two hits, no walks and no runs and struck out two in three innings. Matt Valin (Lafargeville) tossed a hitless inning with a walk and two strikeouts, followed by Jarrod Bellinger (Watertown) with one hit allowed in a scoreless fifth inning. Sal Zafonte (Sayville) gave up two hits but no runs and fanned one in the sixth and Chris Puzakulics (Vestal) gave up a walk and a run and struck out one in the seventh. Anthony Visconte (East Islip) pitched the eighth and gave up a hit, a walk and an unearned run with two strikeouts, and Kyle Naugle (Fayetteville/Jamesville-DeWitt) permitted two hits and an unearned run in the ninth.

Cortland's five-run second started with a Matthew Personius (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) double and a Joe Tardif (Cutchogue/Mattituck) hit-by-pitch. After a Matt Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) sac bunt, Utica got a pop-up for the second out. Frank Vesuvio (Armonk/Byram Hills), however, walked to load the bases and Billy Kozak (Sidney) walked to force home the game's first run. BeVard then hit a hard liner past the shortstop and into the gap in left center for a bases-clearing double. Patrick Schetter (Beacon) finished the scoring on an RBI infield single two batters later.

Tardif singled with one out in the third and scored on Michalski's RBI double to left center to give Cortland a 6-0 lead.

Utica (11-10) scored in the top of the seventh to end Cortland's pitching scoreless streak at 34 straight innings. Adam Nell was hit by a pitch, Zachary Schellenger walked, and a one-out wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Christian Tiffin hit a sac fly to center to score Nell.

Cortland closed its scoring in the bottom of the seventh on an Austin Kaplan (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) two-out, two-run double. Utica mounted a threat in the eighth. Ryan Palmer singled and Tim Quinlan drew a one-out walk. An error loaded the bases, and another error allowed a run to score. Visconte, however, got a lineout and strikeout to end the inning. In the ninth, Jake Ryan singled with one out and eventually scored on an errant throw during an attempted double play.

Eight different players recorded one hit apiece for Cortland. BeVard finished 1-for-2 with a walk and three RBI, Tardif was 1-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch and two runs scored, and Kozak drew a pair of walks. Palmer went 3-for-5 for Utica. The Pioneers used six pitchers, with Brett Sarnowski taking the loss. Justin Shabman threw two hitless and scoreless innings, and Ryan Keefe fanned two in a hitless sixth inning.
