RIT gets back in win column with key doubleheader sweep over Rensselaer

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team (10-9, 6-5 Liberty League) got back in the win column with a doubleheader sweep over Liberty League foe Rensselaer (13-15, 7-6 Liberty League) from sun-drenched Tiger Stadium Saturday afternoon. RIT won game one, 5-4 and took game two, 6-0.
 
In game one, RIT rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 4-3 to earn the 5-4 victory. In the second inning, Benjamin Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) drew a bases loaded walk and Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) hit a two-run single to give RIT a 3-2 lead. After Rensselaer regained the lead with two runs in the third, RIT would score once in the fourth and fifth innings to take the lead for good. Joey Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) singled in Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth.

The Tigers out-hit Rensselaer 7-5, but left 11 men on base. Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) scored a pair of runs, while Zeglen drove in two runs.

RIT starter Brian Reed (Rochester, NY/Penfield) labored through 5 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and four runs with five walks and five strikeouts, picking up the win, improving to 3-2 on the season. Brett Bouchard (Fairport, NY/Fairport) came on in relief and mowed down the Engineers, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings, not allowing a hit and striking out three batters for his first save of the season and eighth of his career.

Ethann Meister doubled, tripled, scored twice and drove in a run for the Engineers. DJ Morone drove in a pair of runs. Three Engineers pitchers combined to throw 142 pitches in six innings.

In game two, RIT opened the scoring with a bases loaded walk by Navada Waterman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) in the fourth inning and pulled away with five runs in the seventh inning. In the seventh, Schulz hit a clutch two-run single with the bases loaded to make it 3-0 and later in the frame, Dalton Murray (Savannah, NY/Clyde-Savannah) drove home two more runs to cap off the big inning.

Terzini, Schulz and Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) reached base three times apiece in the win.

RIT hurlers Stevie Branche (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) and Michael Campbell (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) combined on a two-hit shutout. Branche struck out a season-high 12 batters in six innings, while Campbell pitched the final three innings, needing just 28 pitches without allowing a hit for his first collegiate save.

RIT has now won five of the last six meetings between the two schools dating back to last season.

The Tigers and Engineers will wrap up the regular season series with a pair of games from Tiger Stadium Sunday afternoon, starting at noon.
