ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball (11-10, 7-6 Liberty League) split a home doubleheader on Sunday afternoon against Liberty League rival Rensselaer (14-16, 8-7 Liberty League), dropping game one, 3-2, while rallying to win game two, 4-2. RIT won three of four meetings against Rensselaer this weekend to move into fourth place in the Liberty League standings.

In game one, neither team had a hit over the first four innings. The Tigers got on the board in the top of the fifth inning, as Jason Schulz (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a pair of wild pitches. He showed great awareness to score on the second wild pitch, which dropped just 10 feet from home plate.

Rensselaer would also score an unearned run without a hit to tie the game in the fifth inning. Dalton Murray (Savannah, NY/Clyde-Savannah) would give RIT the 2-1 lead in the sixth inning, driving a fastball to left field to score Navada Waterman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) for the only hit of game one.

Ethann Meister led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run to left field to tie the game at 2-2 and Eric Zeppa hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Christian Spagnuola, who led off with a single.

Christopher Palmiero earned the complete-game win, allowing just a hit and two runs, while striking out nine batters.

Jameson Moran (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) allowed three hits and an earned run over 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts for the Tigers in the no-decision. Brett Bouchard (Fairport, NY/Fairport), who got off a big jam in the bottom of the sixth inning, took the loss after giving up two hits in the seventh inning.

In game two, Meister gave the Engineers an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a run-scoring triple.

RIT starting pitcher Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) would settle down nicely and turn in a dominating performance, allowing just four hits and a walk, while striking out a career-high eight batters to earn his first win of the season. Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) would earn his first collegiate save, pitching a scoreless ninth inning. He was also 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

The Tigers would take the lead for good with three runs in the seventh inning and one more in the eighth. Capra led off the seventh inning with a single and stole second. Kyle Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) would double to left field, scoring Capra to tie the game at 1-1. With two outs, Waterman doubled in Terzini to give RIT the lead and would score on a single by Joey Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) to make it a 3-1 game.

Eric Zecha took the loss for Rensselaer, allowing seven hits and three runs, while striking out five batters in 6 2/3 innings. Meister drove in both Rensselaer runs.

Yesterday, RIT won both games against the Engineers, by scores of 5-4 and 6-0. RIT has won six of the last eight meetings over Rensselaer, dating back to last season.

The Tigers are right back in action with a pair of home games against Liberty League rival Clarkson University. Game one from Tiger Stadium begins at 1 p.m.
