William Paterson Baseball Jumps Ahead Early, Cruises to 10-3 Victory at Farmingdale State

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Five different Pioneers had multi-hit efforts as the William Paterson baseball team (22-11) built an early lead and cruised to a 10-3 victory at Farmingdale State (20-12) April 24.

 

Freshman center fielder Steven DiGirolamo singled to right field with one out during the top of the first, advanced to second on a groundout, and covered the final 180 feet thanks to a pair of wild pitches for a 1-0 edge.

 

WP added five more in the second. Freshman right fielder Dan Carter hit a one-out triple to right-center field and graduate student first baseman Anthony Hoagland sent him home with a base hit up the middle. Freshman left fielder Francis Deane drew a two-out walk, DiGirolamo's triple to right center scored two, and sophomore designated hitter Vin Dorio had an RBI-single up the middle. Sophomore Carlos Perez walked and sophomore second baseman Matt Ferrara added a base hit to center to load the bases, and freshman shortstop Greg Cuevas was hit by a pitch to force across Dorio and make it a 6-0 margin.

 

The Rams used a base hit, steal, walk and double to cross the plate once during the home half of the second.

 

Hoagland opened the third with a triple and Deane sent a sacrifice fly to left for a 7-1 lead. The Pioneers added two more in the fourth, putting together a Perez solo homer over the fence in left center, a Ferrara double to the right-center gap, a groundout and a run-scoring wild pitch.

 

Farmingdale State got two runs back during the fifth inning on a single, two-base error, RBI-groundout, ground-rule double and run-scoring base hit.

 

William Paterson finished the scoring during the top of the sixth when Carter homered to left.

 

DiGirolamo finished 4-for-6 with a triple, two RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Carter went 3-for-5 with a triple, solo home run and two runs. Hoagland was 3-for-5 while adding a triple, RBI and pair of runs scored, Ferrara finished 2-for-5 while hitting a double and scoring a run, and sophomore catcher Eric Breun was 2-for-4.

 

Freshman Christian Smith tossed 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out one (2-0). Classmate Jake Kavanagh pitched 3.0 scoreless innings, scattering four hits while registering two strikeouts, and junior Jack Benson gave up a hit during 1.0 inning of shutout relief.

 

Senior left fielder Thomas Pallatto was 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored for FSC. Freshman starter Lou Puccio was the first of 10 pitchers for the Rams, giving up one run, a hit and a walk with one strikeout during 1.0 inning of action (0-1).

 

William Paterson will celebrate Senior Day Thursday, April 26, when the Pioneers host No. 9/9 The College of New Jersey at 3:30 p.m.
