No. 3 UW-Whitewater Sweeps UW-Platteville

The No. 3 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team downed UW-Platteville, 17-0 and 10-8, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon in Platteville, Wis.
 
UW-Whitewater (22-4 overall, 14-2 WIAC) maintained its first-place standing in the conference by two games in the loss column over second-place UW-Stevens Point.
 
The Warhawks out-hit the Pioneers 20-6 in the first game, including home runs from junior Nick Schrader (Cambridge, Wis./Jefferson) and freshman Bryan Sturdevant (Burlington, Wis./Burlington). The contest was shortened to seven innings due to run rule.
 
Freshman pitcher Matt O'Sullivan (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) tossed the first three innings and collected three strikeouts.  Sophomore pitcher Cooper Michalski(Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Mundelein) tossed the next three innings and tallied the win to make his season record 1-0.  Freshman pitcher Evan Sigmund (Oconto Falls, Wis./Oconto Falls) closed out the game in the seventh inning and registered one strikeout.
 
Senior Daytona Bryden (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) posted three hits, three runs and two runs batted in, senior Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge)added three hits, two runs and one RBI, and junior catcher Mike Aiello (Racine, Wis./Horlick) collected three hits and two runs. Freshman Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) contributed two hits, two runs and two RBI.
 
UW-Whitewater scored 12 runs in the second inning, including a triple from Santoro that sent in two runners. Bryden collected two singles in the inning and two RBI. Aldridge posted a double to left center field and Bryden scored for the Warhawks.
 
An error by UW-Platteville sent in Bryden and sophomore Noah Jensen (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) to make the score 13-0 at the end of the inning.
 
In the fourth inning, Schrader mashed a two-run homer to plate Bryden again.
 
A sacrifice fly to right field from senior Brett Krause (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) sent junior Matt Wary (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) in for the run.
 
Sturdevant accounted for the final margin of the affair with his solo homer with one out in the seventh.
 
Despite UW-Whitewater and UW-Platteville registering an even, 11-11, at bat in the second game, early hitting by the Warhawks was enough to remain on top.
 
Junior pitcher Michael Kaska (Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community)tossed the first seven innings and recorded the win, striking out seven as he improved to 7-1 on the year. Freshman pitcher Weston Muir pitched the eighth inning, and senior Ryan Makuski (Custer, Wis./Amherst) and sophomore Riley Gruetzmacher (Oconto Falls, Wis./Oconto Falls) split the ninth.
 
Gruetzmacher came on with one out and the tying run at the plate, recording the final two outs  to earn his fourth save of the season.
 
Bryden posted three hits, two runs and two RBI and Aldridge collected two home runs and three RBI.  Sophomore right fielder Alex Doud (Waukesha, Wis./Mukwonago)added two hits and two RBI in the victory.
 
A single from Doud in the first inning sent in two runners for UW-Whitewater, but the Pioneers (6-26, 0-16) responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 advantage.
 
In the fifth inning Aiello flied out to left field and senior first baseman Blake Fleischman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) recorded the run to give UW-Whitewater a two-run advantage.
 
The Warhawks continued rallying in the sixth with a homer from Aldridge that posted two RBI and two more home runs in the eighth inning from Bryden and Aldridge to make the score 10-4.
 
In the ninth inning, the Pioneers posted a three-run home run to bring them within two before Gruetzmacher entered the game and closed out the four-game sweep.
 
UW-Whitewater hosts St. Scholastica (Minn.) Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Prucha Field in Jim Miller Stadium. The affair will include one nine-inning game instead of the originally scheduled doubleheader.
