Keuka College Earns NEAC Split with Penn St.-Abington

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Baseball team split a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader with Penn St.-Abington at Kuhl Field on Saturday.  

Keuka College (17-14, 10-5 NEAC) won the first game 5-4 in nine innings. The Nittany Lions then came back to defeat the Wolves 5-3 in game two.

Keuka College 5 vs. Penn St.-Abington 4 – 9 innings

After a scoreless first two innings, the Green and Gold got on the board first in the third. Sean Sheets (Manchester, N.Y. / Red Jacket) doubled over the centerfielder's head. With two outs, Dakota Skinner (Waverly, N.Y. / Tioga) singled to score Sheets. Skinner then scored from first on a double by Dan Bamann (Rochester, N.Y. / Irondequoit) to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead.

Penn St.-Abington got one back on a solo home run in the fourth inning, but the Wolves plated two in the bottom of the frame on a Nittany Lion error to lead 4-1.

The Nittany Lions rallied in the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4. They threatened in the top of the seventh, getting a runner to third base, but reliever Zach Braster (Horseheads, N.Y. / Thomas A. Edison) got a flyout to end the inning and bring Keuka College to the plate with a tie game in the bottom of the seventh. Keuka College would strand a runner on second base and the game would go to extra innings.

In the bottom of the ninth, Sean Sheets led the inning off with an infield single. John Rizzo was up next and laid a bunt down. Rizzo beat it out for a single. On the play, the third baseman charged and Sheets advanced to third with the open base. As the third baseman retreated, the throw from the catcher got past him and Sheets came around to score the game-winning run.

Lead Wolf: Dakota Skinner led the Keuka College offense with three hits in the game. The senior drove in a run and scored one as well for the Green and Gold.

Penn St.-Abington 5 at Keuka College 3

Keuka College got out to a quick lead as they had five hits in the bottom of the first inning. John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) led the inning off with a single. He then went to third on a Dan Bamann double. Kyle Colegrove (Elkland, Pa. / Williamson) scored Rizzo on a single and Bamann came home on a Brooks Vertoske (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) single. Keuka College led 2-0 after the first inning.

The Nittany Lions wasted no time in tying the game. Penn St.-Abington scored a pair in the top of the third to make it 2-2. They then added runs in the third and fifth to take a 4-2 lead.

Keuka College got one back as the Wolves loaded the bases and John Rizzo scored Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J. / Sparta) to send the game to the seventh with Keuka College trailing 4-3. The Nittany Lions added a solo home run as insurance in the seventh as they defeated Keuka College 5-3.

Lead Wolf: Dan Bamann had two hits, including a double, for Keuka College in game two.

KC Notes:

  • The win by Keuka College in game one was just the fourth all-time against Penn St.-Abington. The Nittany Lions hold an 18-4 advantage in the all-time series
  • The win by Keuka also snapped a seven-game losing streak to Penn St.-Abington
  • It was Keuka's fifth extra-innings game of the season. The wolves are 4-1 this year in games that go beyond regulation

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves close the regular season on Sunday with a home doubleheader against Penn St.-Berks. The two teams split the season series last year. Berks is leading the North Eastern Athletic Conference this season with a 16-0 record.
