No. 2 UW-Whitewater Sweeps Twin Bill Against UW-Stevens Point

The No. 2 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team defeated UW-Stevens Point 13-3 and 10-1 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference double header Saturday afternoon at Jim Miller Stadium in Whitewater, Wis.

 

The Warhawks out-hit the Pointers 27-11 on the day while forcing an end to the first game in the seventh inning due to run rule.

 

Senior Austin Jones tossed the first six innings of the game and improved his season record to 6-2 while recording a career-high 13 strikeouts.  Freshman pitcher Weston Muir finished out the game at the mound and registered two strikeouts.

 

Senior designated hitter Cal Aldridge mashed a home run and registered two hits, two runs and two runs batted in.  Senior center fielder Daytona Bryden collected two hits, three runs and one RBI, and junior catcher Mike Aiello posted registered two hits and three RBI.

 

Jones posted two strikeouts in the first inning and the Warhawks concluded the inning with two runs and three hits, including the homer from Aldridge that sent in Bryden.

 

The Pointers (23-12 overall, 14-6 WIAC) responded with two runs in the top of the second inning, making the score 3-2.

 

UW-Whitewater (27-5 overall, 17-3 WIAC) posted six runs in the third inning, including two runs off of an error from UW-Stevens Point to make the score 9-2 at the end of the third inning.

 

A single from Aiello in the fourth inning sent in two more runs for UW-Whitewater.

 

The game ended in the seventh inning as freshman Bryan Sturdevant stepped in to pinch-hit and singled to send in Bryden for the final margin of the game.

 

In the second game, junior pitcher Michael Kaska tossed the first eight innings of the game to improve his season record to 8-1 and collected 11 strikeouts, a career high.  Freshman pitcher Matt O'Sullivan pitched the final inning and collected a strikeout.

 

Bryden posted four hits, three runs and four RBI to lead the Warhawks.  Sophomore outfielder Alex Doud registered two hits and a run and junior outfielder Matt Wary recorded two hits and two runs.

 

UW-Whitewater held the Pointers to zero hits for the first three innings of the game while posting three hits and two runs.

 

In the fourth inning the Warhawks continued their hot hitting that included a homer from Bryden that accounted for three runs.

 

Bryden posted a single in the sixth inning and sent in Wary for the run.

 

UW-Whitewater hit back-to-back doubles from Santoro and Aiello in the eighth inning, and Schrader doubled to account for the final margin of the game.

 

The Warhawks continue play Tuesday, May 8 at Concordia (Wis.) in a non-conference match-up in Mequon, Wis., at 4 p.m.
