Senior Drew Molin threw a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts to lead fourth-seed St. Thomas to a 4-0 victory over No. 5-seed Macalester Thursday night in a first-round elimination game in the MIAC Baseball Playoffs at St. Paul's CHS Field.
It was the seventh shutout of the season for the Tommies (19-16), who got three-hit games from Ryan Lust and Zach Gottfredsen. Hunter Hart and Jake Smith each had two hits, and Smith and Rock Cates scored two runs each. UST scored twice in the first inning and added two runs in the seventh.
Molin lowered his season ERA to 1.51 and improved his career record to 15-5. Molin threw a complete-game 1-0 shutout of St. John's last May to open the 2017 MIAC playoffs.
St. Thomas plays Friday against Bethel at 7 p.m. to begin the double-elimination part of the tournament.
