Maritime Launches Eight Home Runs in Doubleheader Sweep over Mount St. Vincent

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team notched two more conference victories on Sunday afternoon over the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins behind a big offensive day that saw the Privateers score 33 runs and launch eight home runs out of Reinhart Field. The Privateers won the opening game by a 19-4 score while taking game two by a 14-6 margin.
 
Maritime had big offensive days by senior Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and freshman Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, N.Y./Poly Prep) as the pair both went 5-of-9 from the plate. Costleigh had a team-best eight RBIs on the afternoon, while Zurita drove in seven and scored four runs.
 
Sophomore Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) had two home runs on the day while driving in five, while four other Privateers had home runs on the day. Senior Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) added to his program record with his 16th career home run, while senior Zach Parilla (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), and freshman Adam Mosca(Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) both had their first career home runs. Sophomore Jake Vera (Plainview, N.Y./Bethpage)notched his third career home run and first as a Privateer with a two-run blast in game one.
 
Deddo also collected his 31st career double to take sole possession of first place in two-baggers, while also taking sole possession of first place in career total bases as he now has 241 for his career.
 
Mosca had three RBIs on the day, while senior Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) and sophomore Antonio Diaz(Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) each drove in a pair. Senior Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) also drove in one, while Vera drove in two on his home run and Parilla notched one RBI with his solo shot.
 
On the hill junior A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) got the start in game one and struck out five as he only needed to go seven innings as the game was shortened due to the Skyline Conference mercy rule of a 10-run lead after seven innings. Ammirati scattered eight hits while allowing three earned runs.
 
In game two, Maritime fell behind as the Dolphins touched up sophomore starter Brady Dolan (York, Pa./Northeastern) for three earned runs over the first 1 1/3 innings. Junior Alex Poliwoda (Southold, N.Y./Southold) came on and allowed two runs while striking out three over 2 1/3 innings of relief.
 
Senior Matthew Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) came on and threw the next two innings of scoreless baseball as he was the beneficiary of the go-ahead run for the Privateers and secured his first win of the season. Sophomore Skylar Graff (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) came on for the final four outs and notched his fourth save of the year to extend his program record to six.
 
Game 1 Recap
In the opener the Privateers scored early and often as they jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning as Russo cracked his first career home run over the centerfield fence to put the Privateers up 2-0. In the second inning the same scenario came up again as it was Mosca's turn to hit his first career home run to drive in two and put Maritime up 4-0. Deddo then picked up a solo home run in the top of the third inning to put Maritime up by five.
 
With Maritime serving as the road team on its home field, Ammirati got to pitch in the bottom half of innings and retired the first six in order before a leadoff walk came back to bite in the bottom of the third as the Dolphins scored their first run of the game.
 
After a scoreless fourth inning for both side the Privateers put together its biggest inning of the afternoon with nine runs in the fifth. Russo picked up his second two-run homer of the day, before Mosca walked with the bases loaded to give Maritime an 8-1 lead. Zurita drove home two win a single before the bases were loaded for Costleigh.
 
On a 2-2 pitch Costleigh launched a grand slam over the right centerfield fence to blow the game open and give Maritime a 14-1 lead. Mount St. Vincent got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth before Maritime's offense got back to work in the seventh.

Parilla led off the frame with a solo home run to right centerfield before Deddo drove in one with a double down the left field line. Costleigh had an RBI ground out to make the score 17-3, before Vera capped off the scoring with his first home run as a Privateer to make the score 19-3.
 
Ammirati took care of the rest, allowing one unearned run in the bottom of the seventh before getting the final two batters to register his second win of the season.
 
Game 2 Recap
Maritime did not have the early success as it did in the opener as the Privateers fell behind by four as the Dolphins plated three in the first and one more in the second inning.
 
The Privateers began chipping away at the deficit in the third as Deddo, Costleigh and Russo all had back-to-back-to-back singles with Russo picking up one RBI, while Schiavoni followed with a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit in half.
 
Maritime added one more run to pull back within one in the top of the fourth as Costleigh walked on four pitches with the bases loaded to make the score 4-3. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Dolphins regained a three-run lead with two in the inning to increase the Mount St. Vincent lead to 6-3.
 
In the top of the fifth Schiavoni led off with a walk on a 3-1 pitch before Semler doubled to left centerfield on a booming double. Freshman Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Chaminade) walked on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. Two batters later Maritime was at the top of the order and it was Zurita's moment to shine as he hit a home run on an 0-2 pitch into the Mount St. Vincent bullpen to give Maritime its first lead of the game at 7-6.
 
Buckshaw held the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a quick inning and got the Privateers through the first two outs in the sixth before giving way to Graff who retired the final batter of the inning without allowing the two inherited runners to score.
 
In the top of the seventh Maritime scored seven more runs as Zurita connected on an RBI single, followed by a two-run single off the bat of Costleigh. Diaz picked up two RBIs with a single to right centerfield to increase the Privateer lead to six at 12-6. Semler capped off the scoring with a two-run double to the left centerfield gap to put the Privateers up 14-6.
 
Graff yielded a pair of singles and one walk in the bottom of the seventh after retiring the first batter, but the sophomore stranded the bases full with a pair of strikeouts to close out the game.
 
Maritime (19-9, 8-4 Skyline) will wrap up non-conference play on Wednesday evening as the Privateers host City College of New York for a 7 p.m. start on the Reinhart Baseball Field.
 
Mount St. Vincent (8-20, 2-10 Skyline) will also play a non-conference opponent on Wednesday, when the Dolphins travel to St. Davids, Pa. to meet the Eastern Eagles for a 3:30 p.m. start.
