Maritime Collects Sweep over St. Joseph’s (Bklyn)

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maritime collected a two-game sweep over the Bears of St. Joseph's (Bklyn) on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Reinhart Baseball Field. Maritime took game one by a score of 5-1 and in game two the Privateers won 10-3.
 
Senior shortstop Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's)led the Privateers in hits on the day with four in his eight at bats. He also had two home runs, two RBIs and scored four runs. Senior Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) and freshman Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, N.Y./Poly Prep) each collected three hits for the day.
 
Semler also had two home runs while Zurita also had one homer. Freshman outfielder Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Chaminade) joined in on the action too as he hit his second home run of the season while knocking in two runs. Senior second baseman Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) tied the career total bases record at Maritime after today, and now has 234 total bases for his career.
 
Maritime sent freshman Dylan Clausen (Southold, N.Y./Southold) out to the hill for the game one. He went allowed one earned run while fanning nine batters in eight complete innings of work and freshman Kyle Peterson (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) came on in relief to finish game one.
 
On the mound for game two was senior Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) who went the distance, completing seven innings while striking out five batters and allowing just three earned runs. After his performance today, D'Ancona is now the modern-day career record holder for innings pitched. He has pitched 193 innings over his four-year career. He also tied the modern-day career record for strikeouts after today and now has 142 career strikeouts to his credit.
 
Game 1 Recap
Maritime got the bottom of the first going with back to back singles by Zurita and Costleigh followed by a triple from sophomore Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), scoring both Zurita and Costleigh. Schiavoni singled next allowing Russo to score, making the score 3-0 after one.
 
Clausen cruised through the next four innings striking out five and allowing just three hits. St. Joseph's (Bklyn) scored their first run in the top of the sixth after an RBI single through the right side, making the score 3-1. Maritime came right back in the bottom of the sixth with a single from Schiavoni and then a two-run home run by Semler putting the Privateers up 5-1.
 
Clausen held St. Joseph's (Bklyn) scoreless over the next two innings and then Peterson came in to handle the ninth as Maritime defeated St. Joseph's (Bkyln) 5-1 in game one of the doubleheader.
 
Game 2 Recap
D'Ancona kept the momentum going as he struck out two in the top of the first. Costleigh put Maritime on the scoreboard with a solo home run to left center making it 1-0.
 
St. Joseph's (Bklyn) managed to push across three runs in the top of the second after three hits in four at bats. The Privateers came back in the bottom of the second to tie it after a two-run home run to left field by Semler.
 
D'Ancona retired the side in the top of the third and then Zurita led of the bottom half of the inning with a home run to dead center field making it 4-3. Two batters later Costleigh knocked his second home run of the day, a solo shot to right center as Maritime now leads 5-3 after three full innings.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Maritime tacked on one more run to make the score 6-3, off an error by St. Joseph's (Bklyn).
 
With Maritime leading 7-3 headed into the bottom of the sixth they tacked on three more to make it 10-3. Sullivan homered down the left field line, scoring Semler also and then freshman outfielder Adam Mosca (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) scored on a wild pitch.
 
D'Ancona completed the seventh, stranding two runners on base as Maritime defeated the Bears 10-3 in game two to complete the doubleheader sweep.
 
Maritime (17-9, 6-4 Skyline) will be back in action tomorrow Sunday April 15th when they take on Mount St. Vincent at Reinhart Baseball Field. Game one of the doubleheader will start at 12 p.m.
 
St. Joseph's (Bklyn) (3-23, 1-9 Skyline) will return to play tomorrow Sunday April 15th, when they host Old Westbury at Calvert Vaux Park in a Skyline Conference doubleheader with first pitch set for at 12 p.m.
