Bats Come Alive as WPI Stymies Husson Twice in Florida Finale

Auburndale, FL --- The WPI baseball team accumulated 37 hits in a pair of shutouts of Husson Saturday at the RussMatt Invitational. The Engineers (9-1) won the opener 8-0 and the spring break finale by a count of 22-0.

Senior Ryan Tropeano (Pembroke, MA), junior David Larson (Port Tobacco, MD), graduate Student Matt Howard (Worcester, MA), senior Josh Herlands (Glastonbury, CT) and freshman Martin McCormack (Quincy, MA) all clubbed a pair of hits in the first game while junior Tyrone Patterson (Upper Marlboro, MD) registered a team-best three hits in the nightcap.

The second game also saw Tropeano, Howard, Herlands, McCormack, as well as, junior Nick Wright (Foxboro, MA), senior Steven Gallagher (Coventry, RI) and freshman Andrew Brooks (Millis, MA) all chip in with a pair of hits.

Larson and senior Tyler Weiss (Monroe, CT) struck out 10 in their respective six-inning starts as junior Keith Scales (Upper Marlboro, MD) and senior Dominic Fusco (North Haven, CT) made a relief appearance, respectively.

The Engineers notched one in the second, six in the third and one in the fifth of the initial contest. WPI had another six in the second of final game. Two more crossed in the second before five in the sixth and nine in the seventh.

The Crimson and Gray return to New England to take on Brandeis Thursday at the New England Baseball Complex.
