Sewanee Baseball Defeats Covenant, 12-7, in Midweek Contest

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee baseball team used had key plate appearances in the fifth and sixth innings to snap a three-game losing streak, 12-7, Tuesday afternoon inside Montgomery Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Scots jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an inning and a half of play, but the Tigers avoided the shutout with an RBI groundout.

-After a sacrifice fly by the Scots to make it 4-1 in the bottom half of the third, Sewanee made it a one-run game. Carter Huffman reached base on a fielding error that scored Riley Brandvold. Later in the inning, Chris McNulty came home on a wild pitch to make it a 4-3 affair in favor of the visitors.

-The Scots responded with two runs in the fourth to push it to 6-3.

-The Tigers offense came to life in the bottom of the fifth with a four-spot. Carter Huffman scored Brandvold on a base knock.

-The next batter, Josh Roberts scorched a double to the gap to score Trey Akins.

-Following a Covenant pitching change, Bryce Benedict brought Huffman home on a base hit. During Wesley Christian's at-bat, Roberts stole home to give Sewanee the lead, 7-6.

-Covenant responded in the sixth to even the score at 7-7, but the Tigers reclaimed the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. After Huffman reached base on an error, Brandvold scored.

-In the eighth, McNulty reached base on another Scots error and Jack Ahlum came around to score.

-Later in the frame, Huffman posted a two-run double into the gap to score McNulty and Brandvold to give Sewanee a 12-7 advantage.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Carter Huffman recorded a 3-for-5 day with five RBI and scored twice.

-Riley Brandvold scored four times in five plate appearances, finishing with a 3-for-4 day.

-Nick Ewing (1-0) earned the win in relief, striking out four in 3.1 innings. The junior allowed three hits and one earned run.

COVENANT KEY STATISTICS
-Tyler Moore drove in two runs and posted two hits.

-Ken Burke also recorded a two-hit day.

-Jonah Carignan (0-1) allowed two runs in the sixth inning that gave Sewanee the lead for good.

UP NEXT
Sewanee will next host Eureka in a midweek, three-game series with Eureka. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
