More news about: Concordia-Chicago

Kissimmee, Fla. – After enjoying an off day yesterday, the Concordia University Chicago Baseball team took to the field today for game three of the Florida trip. CUC didn't miss a beat as a team hitting two grand slams and a two run homer to go along with a complete game effort on the mound to down Fredonia 12-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Brody Mariotti and Connor Brandon both hit grand slams. Both now have double digit RBI's on the season.
  • Mateo Calle hit a two run blast in the third, his first of the season.
  • Jose Mercado had three more hits and four stolen bases. He is now hitting .517 and has ten steals through six games.
  • Alex Crinigan was dominate, throwing seven innings while allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six.

Fredonia was able to strike first in the bottom of the second. The Blue Devils plated a run on three hits in the inning, with the run scoring hit going down the left field line.

The Cougars answered quickly in the third. Brayden Benavides started things off by knocking an 0-2 pitch up the middle for a base hit. Mercado was then hit by a pitch to put two on. A walk loaded the bases for Mariotti who drilled a 2-0 pitch deep over the left field fence for his third homer of the year to give CUC a 4-1 lead.

CUC was not done in the inning however. One out later an error put a runner on for Calle. The junior crushed a 2-0 fastball to left for his first homer of the season.

The Cougars added on a single run in the fourth on a perfectly executed delayed steal on a first and third situation that allowed Mercado to score.

Crinigan continued to cruise on the mound sitting the Blue Devils down in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

CUC blew the game wide open in the sixth. With two outs and no one on Mercado reached base with his third hit of the day. A walk and two hit batters followed to plate a run and load the bases for Brandon. The senior outfielder took advantage of a 2-0 fastball like Mariotti and Calle and mashed a long homer to straight away center field to make it 12-1 CUC.
Crinigan made quick work of the final two innings, finishing out his complete game effort in just 84 pitches.

The Cougars (5-1) will take on Webster University tomorrow starting at 11:00 am (ET). The game will be played on the campus of St.Leo University in St.Leo, Fla.
