Case Western Reserve University sophomore outfielder/ catcher Jake Ryan matched a program record with six hits, and freshman right-handed pitcher Willem Bouma pitched five shutout innings in his first-career start, as the Spartans dominated Roger Williams University in a 19-1 win in seven innings on Wednesday at the Spartan Southern Classic in Lexington, South Carolina.
The win gave the Spartans a resounding response after getting swept in a doubleheader on Tuesday, as the team improved to 5-5 overall, while Roger Williams dropped to 3-2 with the loss.
Ryan picked up a hit in each of the six innings the Spartans came to bat in the game, all singles, going six-for-six with three runs scored and two runs batted in, and is now leading the team with a .357 batting average this season. Junior centerfielder Samuel Neal drove in six runs in the game, going two-for-three with a double and his team-leading second home run of the season, a three-run blast to right centerfield as a part of a 12-run fourth inning for the Spartans. Senior third baseman Jacob Kucia added a career-best five-for-five day at the plate with two runs and three RBIs.
As a team, CWRU collected a season-high 24 hits in the game. The 19 runs scored on Wednesday were the most the Spartans have scored in a game since a 20-15 win over Emory on March 25, 2017.
The Spartans broke out early, scoring three runs in the bottom, hitting around during the opening stanza of the game. An RBI single by Kucia got the Spartans on the board, and the team added runs on a run-scoring ground out by sophomore designated hitter Tre Armstrong and a bases-loaded walk issued to Neal.
The three runs would have been enough for Bouma, who allowed just four hits over five shutout innings, striking out six batters without issuing a walk. He needed just 58 pitches (43 strikes) to navigate his five innings of work, earning the win in the game to improve to 2-0 on the year. Bouma extended his career-starting scoreless innings streak to 10 with the effort.
The Spartans added a run in the third, and then sent 15 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring 12 runs during the frame to take a 16-0 lead. Roger Williams scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth against junior Noah Mehrle, who made his collegiate debut on the mound on Wednesday. However, the Spartans added three more runs on in the bottom of the sixth, and Mehrle pitched a perfect seventh to secure the run-rule win.
Mehrle finished the game with a pair of scoreless innings, striking out two batters.
Starter Brett Tyler took the loss for Roger Williams, dropping to 0-1 on the year.
The two teams will meet one last time in Lexington, completing their four-game series on Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
