Lions Drop Extra Inning Affair to Cal Lutheran 4-3 in 11 Innings

TUCSON, Ariz. - A walkoff single for the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen handed the Piedmont College baseball team its first loss of the year 4-3 in 11 innings. Both BRADY BALLSTADT and TYLER BURDETTE had a pair of hits each as Piedmont had 10 hits to Cal Lutheran's seven. 

Piedmont had a promising opportunity to open the game with two singles by ZACHARY SWINDELL and Ballstadt combined with a double steal to put two in scoring position. TYLER BURDETTE walked to load the bases but all three were left stranded in the first. 

Cal Lutheran had a triple to start the bottom of the frame and Cortez Espinoza was driven in on a sac fly on the next play to give the Kingsmen a 1-0 lead. Both teams went 1-2-3 in the second and both the top and bottom of the third innings ended on a pick off play at first. 

In the fourth inning, ANDREW BURDEN scored on a Burdette single after Burden struck out but reached on a wild pitch then advanced to second on another WP. Burdette and Meade were aboard when WES SNYDER ripped one for a triple to score two and put the Lions ahead 3-1. 

In the bottom of the fifth, the Kingsmen picked up a run on a solo homerun by Weston Clark making it 3-2. The Kingsmen would add another run in the bottom of the sixth after starter MAX BENING gave way to DAVID CRAFT as they entered the seventh tied at three. 

Craft worked out of a jam in the seventh as Cal Lutheran loaded the bases but a flyout to CF was secured by Ballstadt leaving the score knotted. MATT VONDERSCHMIDT took the loss for the Lions after pitching 3.1 innings giving up just one hit, the game winner, but struck out four of the 13 batters he faced. 

The Lions left 12 runners stranded in the contest to the Kingsmen's seven. 

Turning Point
--It took extra innings to decide the contest, but a hitter batter in the 11th inning combined with a stolen base allowed a single to score the game winner. 

Standout Performances
--WES SNYDER had a 2-RBI triple in the fourth inning to score EVAN MEADE and TYLER BURDETTE to put Piedmont up 3-1.

Inside the Box Score
--The Lions recorded five stolen bases in the contest.

--This was MAX BENING's first start on the mount since April 21, 2017.
