Auburndale, Fla.--  After picking up a hard earned win over Ramapo yesterday, the Concordia University Chicago Baseball team looked to go a perfect 6-0 over the Florida trip while extending their win streak today against the College of New Jersey. The game had a postseason feel to it from start to finish, and it was the Cougars who were able to plate the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to win 3-2.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Mateo Calle led the way with two hits.
  • Kyle Strepek had a strong outing working seven innings, allowing just five hits and two unearned runs.
  • Anthony RogersRobert Perna and Cade Laudenschlager combined for two scoreless innings of relief with Laudenschlager picking up the win.
  • This was the first time that CUC has gone undefeated on the spring break trip.
  • The CUC win streak now stands at eight.

Strepek worked in and out of trouble in the top of the first. He worked around two walks and a hit by pitch by getting a double play ball to short. The two pitchers settled in from there, putting zeros on the board until the fifth.

The CUC half of the fifth began with a Calle double down the right field line. A groundout allowed Calle to advance to third with one out. CUC then executed a perfect suicide squeeze play down the first base line to score Calle to take a 1-0 lead.

TCNJ answered back in the top of the seventh. A single and an error started the inning, putting two on with no out. A sac moved the two runners into scoring position, and a sac fly and a single up the middle gave the lions a 2-1 lead.

CUC was able to tie it up in the bottom of the seventh. With one out it was Calle who got things started by ripping a 2-2 pitch through the left side for a base hit. Gianfranco Sorrentino followed with a single down the right field line. Calle was running hard the whole way and went from first to third on the play. Brayden Benavides then tied the game at two with a sac fly to center.

CUC found themselves in a jam in the top of the eighth. TCNJ was able to load the bases with just one out on two hits and a walk. Perna was able to escape trouble by inducing a soft liner to first and a popup to second to keep the score tied.

The Cougars found a way to win in the bottom of the ninth. Connor Brandon led things off by working a full count walk. A hit batter then put runner on first and second with no one out. One out later a wild pitch put the winning run at third. Brandon then scored the winning run when the TCNJ pitcher did not throw the ball as he got caught in his throwing motion which was called a balk.

The Cougars (8-1) will travel back to Chicago to get ready for northern baseball beginning on Friday. CUC will take on Concordia College from Minnesota starting at 11:00am from Lee Pfund Stadium.
