Keuka College Splits with Albright; Earns First Win of 2019

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The Keuka College Baseball team earned their first win of the 2019 season as they split a doubleheader with Albright College in Auburndale, Florida.

Keuka College (1-7) dropped the opener to the Lions 5-4, but bounced back strong in game two for a 10-4 victory.

Albright College 5 vs. Keuka College 4 – Game One

The Lions got on the board first in the second inning as they connected for a three-run home run.

The Wolves got two runs back in the bottom of the third as Brooks Vertoske (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) hit a two-out, two-run single for Keuka to make it a 3-2 game.

The Green and Gold got back on the in the fourth as a double by Dave Verrett (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) scored Anthony Mashewske (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) from first base. Following a bunt single by Anthony Brown (Schenectady, N.Y. / Schenectady), Verrett stole home as a part of a double steal to give the Wolves a 4-3 lead.

Albright answered with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to regain the lead. The Lions would hold onto the one-run lead for the rest of the game as they defeated the Wolves 5-4.

Lead Wolf: Brooks Vertoske stayed hot for the Wolves as he extended his career-best hitting streak. Vertoske had a single and a double for Keuka in game one. He drove in two runs and scored one as well.

Keuka College 10 vs. Albright College 4 – Game Two

The Wolves wasted no time in game two getting on the scoreboard. The Wolves started the game with a single by Sean Sheets (Manchester, N.Y. / Red Jacket), a double by Tyler Freedman (Rochester, N.Y. / Aquinas Institute), and a two-run triple by Dan Bamann (Rochester, N.Y. / Irondequoit). By the end of the top of first inning, Keuka College held a 4-0 advantage.

Keuka College threatened to add to their lead in the third inning as Brooks Vertoske led the inning off with a triple, but would be stranded at third as Keuka remained ahead 4-0.

The Lions got a run back in the bottom of the third, but the Wolves quickly got that back in the fourth. Keuka College then added to their lead taking advantage of a two-run error with two outs to make it a 7-1 game.

The Wolves extended their lead to 10-1 with three more runs in the top of the fifth. Albright got three back in the sixth, but the Wolves continued on to the 10-4 victory.

Lead Wolf: Sean Sheets was on base all five times to the plate on Tuesday against Albright. The sophomore had three singles and two walks in game two. Sheets scored three runs against the Lions as well.

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves have an off day on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday afternoon. Keuka College will face St. Norbert College in a doubleheader on Thursday. It will be the first time that that Green Knights and Wolves have squared off on the baseball diamond.
