TUCSON, Ariz. -- Allegheny put up 18 runs in the first five innings, but needed to hold on for a 21-18 win over Hamline (Minn.) at Kino Sports Complex Field 4.
It was a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning by senior third baseman Vincent Carone (Erie, Pa./McDowell) that helped seal the game as the Gators were clinging to a 19-18 lead.
Allegheny struck for eight runs in the first inning, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of senior left fielder Ethan Pawlak (Chardon, Ohio/Gilmour Academy). In the second, the Gators added five more runs to push the lead out to 13-1. In that frame, junior right fielder Keegan Phillips (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) delivered a two-run double and senior first baseman Max Sessions (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) belted his second homer in as many games.
The Pipers cut the lead to 14-8 heading to the bottom of the fifth, but, with the bases loaded, junior Andrew Vincent (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) was called on to pinch hit and delivered the first home run of his career, a grand slam blasted to left field.
Senior Dalton Donachie (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Local) earned the win for the second-straight game to improve to 2-0. He worked the final 3.0 innings and scattered six hits and three runs, but got a 1-2-3 ninth inning to slam the door.
A trio of Gators had three hits: Carone, Phillips and junior center fielder Bret Kelly(Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda). Carone and Phillips both went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs, while Kelly was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Sessions, senior catcher Tommy Cannon(Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and sophomore third baseman Luke Chutko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) each tallied a pair of hits, with Sessions driving in three runs and Cannon walking twice and scoring three runs. Pawlak and Vincent both drove in four runs on their grand slams.
The 21 runs scored are the most by a Gator team since defeating Wentworth Institute of Technology, 21-17, on March 15, 2008 in Port Charlotte, Fla.
With the victory, Allegheny improves to 3-1 on the trip to Arizona and 5-6 overall this season. The Gators will play a doubleheader against Grinnell (Iowa) at Kino Sports Complex Field 7 on Thursday, March 21 beginning at 11 a.m. Mountain Standard Time (2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time).
