Brett Lindsay (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) stepped in to bat with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and hit a bases clearing double to left center field to highlight a seven-run eighth inning as the EMU Diamond Royals beat Washington and Lee 7-5 Wednesday afternoon.
The Royals improve to 2-4 in conference play as they head to Hampden-Sydney for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
The Generals (8-10/ 2-6 ODAC) jumped out in front first scoring three runs in the top of the third inning on a two-run double and RBI single.
The Royals made some noise in the bottom of the fourth inning loading the bases with one out, but were unable to get a run across.
Two RBI singles in the top of the seventh inning added two more runs for Washington and Lee increasing their lead to five.
Jaylon Lee (Newport News, Va./Denbigh) got the bottom of the eighth inning started by driving a ball to center field for a leadoff triple. After a walk, Corey Willis (Fredricksburg, Va./Massaponax) brought home Lee on a sacrifice fly. Three walks loaded the bases for EMU then Billy Quinn (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) hit an RBI single followed by a wild pitch to bring home the third run.
Jordan Jones (Saxe, Va./Randolph Henry) walked to set the table for Lindsay who smashed the first pitch he saw into deep left center field to clear the bases and put EMU in the lead for the first time all game. Lee hit a single to score Lindsay from second base to cap the inning.
Ethan Mathews (Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) threw 1.2 innings scoreless to pick up the win and John Judy (Shanks, W.V./Hampshire) struck out the final batter to earn the one out save.
Freshman Connor Lutz (Colonial Beach, Va./Colonial Beach) started the game for EMU. He threw six innings striking out four while giving up three runs, none of which were earned.
Lindsay finished 2-5 with the double and three RBIs. Lee and Willis both had two hits and an RBI. Jones added a double and scored once.
Zach Loewenberg finished 2-4 with three RBIs for the Generals.
