The Baruch College Bearcats won both games of their CUNYAC doubleheader today against Lehman College at MCU Park in Brooklyn. The Bearcats won the first game, 2-1, before powering past the Lightning 10-5 in the second.
Game 1
Theodore Avgerinos pitched a gem of a game for the Bearcats. The junior went the full seven innings while striking out six batters.
The Bearcats had their breakthrough in the fourth inning, when Gerardo Roque singled to drive in Angelo Alessandro. Two batters later, Liam O'Gara singled and drove Michael McGroarty, putting the Bearcats ahead 2-0.
That was all the offense Baruch needed. Dominant pitching from Avgerinos and some stellar defense by the Bearcats ensured their first conference win of the season.
Game 2
The Bearcats scored early and often in the second game. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, McGroarty hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Davic Capellan to tie the game. Roque then smacked a doubled to right field, driving in Alessandro for a 2-1 advantage.
The Bearcats did not trail from that point on. The team scored two runs in each the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to keep the game out of reach for the Lightning.
Roque had two hits and three RBIs in the game. Conor McCabe and Alessandro both had two hits and two RBIs apiece.
Hasan Deljanin earned the win for the Bearcats after a strong outing in 4.1 inning of work. Ryan Warner saw out the final 2.2 innings to earn the save.
The Bearcats will next play on Tuesday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m., when they travel to Long Island to take on Farmingdale State.
