Oxy Baseball Sweeps Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONTJake Fredrickson hit his third homer of the day as the Occidental baseball team hung on for a 7-6 win over Pomona-Pitzer in Game 3 on Saturday, sweeping its weekend series with the Sagehens.

Fredrickson, Oxy's first baseman, had a huge day at the plate going 6 for 9 with three home runs, six RBIs, and four runs scored. Hit hit a pair of two-run homers to help lead Oxy to a 10-4 win in the early game and went 1 for 4 with a solo home run that started a three-run second inning in the afternoon game. 

The Tigers never trailed in the final game of the series and were able to hold off the Sagehens for the victory despite them putting the tying runner on second base in the bottom of the ninth.

Max Sterner came on to pitch the final two outs and record the save for Oxy.

Tom Butler started the game and earned the win, going 5.1 innings with three strikeouts and no earned runs.

Designated hitter Antonio Andrade went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Center fielder Jack Brancheau was 2 for 5, left fielder Eamon McNeil was 2 for 4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI, right fielder Angelo Zorn went 1 for 5 with a pair of RBIs and third baseman Gus Patrick went 1 for 2 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored. 

Tyler Yoshihara pitched the first six innings and was charged with the loss for Pomona-Pitzer. 

Oxy senior second baseman Reid Gibbs went 0 for 5, having his impressive 21-game hitting streak come to an end.

Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 19-9 overall and 7-5 in SCIAC play. Oxy will be no lower than third place in the conference standings at the end of the weekend.

The Sagehens fall to 14-12 and 4-11.

Next Game: The Tigers begin a three-game series at Caltech next Friday at 3 p.m. The teams will return to Anderson Field on Saturday for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
