- The Lead: With a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon, the MIT baseball team completed a three-game series sweep of Emerson College to move to 5-1 in NEWMAC play. Game one was a 22-4 final, followed the 9-4 victory in game two that moved the Engineers into second place in the league's East Division standings.
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Engineers took a 3-0 lead in the first behind a two-run homer to left by junior Thomas Allison (Kingwood, Texas). MIT scored twice in the third, once in the fourth and six times in the fifth as first-year Cory O'Shea's (Glen Allen, Va.) two-RBI triple to right made it a 13-0 margin heading to the bottom of the fifth.
- Emerson struck for three runs in the sixth, followed by four MIT runs in the top of the seventh behind a three-RBI triple to right by Allison that scored sophomore Andrew Krause (St. Louis, Mo.), junior Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) and senior Jared Schwait (Boca Raton, Fla.) to make it 17-3. Johnston capped off his four-hit day with two-RBI singles in both the eighth and ninth innings as the Engineers took the eventual 22-4 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Sophomore Casey Bussone (Danvers, Mass.) went seven innings on the field where he played high school baseball for St. John's Prep. Scattering eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts, he improved to 2-1 with the victory. Anthony Pugliese took the loss for Emerson, lasting just 2.1 innings with three hits, six earned runs and two walks. First-year Giovanni Ahern (Darien, Ill.) pitched the final two innings for MIT, allowing one run and one hit.
- Johnston was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBI, while Allison went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, five RBI and two walks. O'Shea posted a pair of runs and four RBI, along with three RBI by senior Alec Kushner (Cooper City, Fla.), two hits and four runs scored from sophomore Ethan Rolland (Burke, Va.) and 13 overall walks drawn.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In game two, Krause got the Engineers out in front 1-0 with an RBI double to right before the Lions countered in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single by Ryan McCahan. Kushner singled to center in the third to put MIT up 2-1 before the Lions put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth and took a 4-2 lead heading to the fifth as Calvin Jacey tripled down the right field line to drive in two.
- Three unearned runs for the Engineers put MIT in front 5-4 in the fifth, followed by a run by junior Tony Rice (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the eighth and a three-run homer to center by Johnston in the eighth to account for the 9-4 final. Johnston now has six home runs on the year and leads the NEWMAC with 35 runs batted in.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Senior Zeke Long (Albuquerque, N.M.) moves to 2-1 on the season with the win as he allowed five hits and four runs in four innings pitched. First-year Jonah Scott (Oak Park, Calif.) threw two innings of scoreless ball, followed by the eighth and ninth by Allison as he struck out four to preserve the win. Gabe Fields was the losing pitcher for Emerson, dropping to 0-1 in 2.1 innings.
- Krause and Kushner both had three hits in game two, while Schwait scored twice and Johnston went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three runs batted in.
- MIT is now 19-0 all-time vs. the Lions in the series that began in the 1999 season.
