Waltham, Mass., April 7, 2019 – No. 18 Washington University in St. Louis baseball finished off a four-game sweep of Brandeis University Sunday morning by beating the Judges 11-0 after seven innings of play at Stein Diamond.
WashU improved to 20-3-1 overall including 6-0 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play as the Judges dropped to 9-13 (0-8 UAA) following the sweep. The Bears completed their eighth shutout and eighth double digit run total of the season during the win.
Junior pitcher Matt Ashbaugh held Brandeis scoreless in six innings of work and limited the Judges to just one-hit. Ashbaugh matched a season-high six innings pitched while combining with sophomore pitcher Tim Tague for the shutout. Tague struck out two batters without allowing a hit in the final inning of the game.
Senior second baseman Evan Nagel knocked in a career-high four runs while going 3-for-5 from the plate with two doubles. Junior catcher Thomas Gardner went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
After two scoreless innings the Bears struck in the third with back-to-back doubles by freshman shortstop Caleb Durbin and Nagel. WashU plated four more in the fifth including another run scoring double by Nagel.
Freshmen left fielder Brendan Hall and designated hitter Zac Styka had back-to-back run scoring singles. Gardner hit a sacrifice fly to put the Bears ahead 5-0 for the final run of the fifth.
WashU exploded for six runs in the seventh inning to push its lead to double figures. Gardner, junior first baseman Brian Schutter and junior center fielder John Ostrander hit run scoring singles that put the Bears up 8-0. Schutter scored on a wild pitch before Nagel extended WashU's advantage to 11-0 with a two-run single.
Tague entered the seventh inning and shut down the Judges allowing one base runner to reach on an error but striking out the final batter to conclude the sweep.
WashU returns home for its UAA home opening series against New York University on Friday, April 12. Alumni day will be held on Saturday, April 13 during the Red & Green's doubleheader.
