Marietta splits with Mount Union under the lights at Schaly Stadium

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College and the University of Mount Union split an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Tuesday (April 9) evening at Don Schaly Stadium. The Purple Raiders took game one, 8-7, and the Etta Express won game two, 5-1. Both teams are 4-4 in the OAC, while Marietta is 10-13 overall and Mount Union is 16-8 on the season.

Mount Union scored two runs in the ninth inning to come from behind to win game one. Both teams traded leads with Marietta jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Mount Union lead off Hitter Billy Goodall hit a three-run home run in the fifth and a two-run shot in the sixth as the Purple Raiders went in front, 6-4.

The Pioneers retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Drew Holderbach scored on an error and then Logan Vietmeier delivered a bases-loaded, pinch hit double to left. Drew Wilkinson was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first base.

Sam Mathews (1-2) took the loss after allowing two euns on three hits in 1.0 inning of work. Jared Strickler started and threw 4.2 innings. He gave up four runs on four hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Brenden Lacorato threw 3.1 innings and gave up two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out seven.

Dan Zelina (1-0) got the win in relief for Mount Union. He tossed 2.0 innings and allowed three runs, all unearned, on four hits with two strikeouts. Phil Mary started and pitched 7.0 innings. He allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Mike Hale, Drew Holderbach and Brady Cottom each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers. Vietmeier and Seamus Kenneally each drove in two runs.

Sophomore John Stover (4-1) kept the Purple Raiders hitters off balance in game two. He started and went 5.2 innings for the win. Stover allowed on unearned run on six hits. He walked two and struck out four. Mathews held Mount Union without a hit over the final 3.1 innings for his fifth save of the season. He struck out three.

The Pioneers plated three runs in the second inning and never trailed. Infield singles from Vietmeier and Holderbach, couple with a walk to Eddie Poster loaded the bases with two outs.

Wilkinson drove in Vietmeier with the first run on a ball deep in the hole at shortstop for another infield single. Damian Yenzi then worked a bases loaded walk scoring Holderbach. Poster scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Hale led off the fourth inning with a double to right field. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Holderbach.

Mount Union scored an unearned in the fifth inning and the Pioneers picked up an unearned run in the sixth for the 5-1 final score.

Carson Davis (3-1) started and got the loss for the Purple Raiders. He went 5.2 innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits. He walked three and struck out four. Colin Skufca pitched the final 2.1 innings giving up one hit.

Vietmeier was the lone Pioneers with two hits in the game. Poster scored twice and Wilkinson had two runs batted in.

Marietta hosts No. 18 ranked Denison University for a single nonconference game on Thursday (April 11). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
