The Baruch College Bearcats fell 6-5 to the Panthers of SUNY Old Westbury today on Long Island.
The Bearcats went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first. Conor McCabe hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Kemal Deljanin, who had led the inning off with a walk.
The Panthers, out of the Skyline Conference, responded immediately, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.
The Bearcats scored three runs in the third to retake the lead. McCabe picked up his second RBI of the game when he grounded out with the bases loaded, bringing home Davic Capellan.
JP Ramirez followed with an RBI single, driving in Deljanin for his second run of the afternoon. Two batters later, Nicholas Altopiedi hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Michael McGroarty.
Old Westbury battled back yet again, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.
Matthew Lawlor pitched 4.1 innings of shutout baseball in relief, keeping the Bearcats within striking distance.
The Bearcats got within a run of the Panthers in the fifth. Jorge Keith Mercado hit a single to drive McGroarty home for his second run of the game.
That is as close as the Bearcats would get, as the Panthers held on for the 6-5 victory.
The Bearcats will return to conference play on Thursday April 11 at 3:30 p.m., when they travel to take on the College of Staten Island in a rescheduled contest.
