WAYNE, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) |For the second time in less than a week, the New Jersey City University baseball team played a New Jersey Athletic Conference game that extended deep into extra innings. After NJCU defeated Rutgers-Camden on April 6 in 13 innings, the Gothic Knights could not survive William Paterson University in a game that stretched even further.

NJCU and William Paterson were tied 1-1 from the fourth inning until the top of the 14th inning, when the Gothic Knights (12-11, 2-6 NJAC) moved on top, 2-1. But the Pioneers (17-9, 4-4 NJAC) answered in the bottom of the 14th, winning 3-2 on a bases-loaded walkoff walk on April 12 at Jeff Albies Field.

At 14 innings, the game becomes the longest played by NJCU in 24 years; On April 27, 1995, NJCU defeated Ramapo, 13-12, in 15 innings in Jersey City. (PDF)

Freshman right-handed pitcher Paul Tannucilli (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) had by far the best performance of his collegiate career, throwing the first 8.0 innings, allowing just four hits and one unearned run in the fourth inning while throwing 100 pitches. He walked two and fanned one.

NJCU senior righty and ace Fernando Guerrero (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) was handed the ball in the ninth and in 5.2 innings, struck out eight and walked just three against five hits. But in the bottom of the 14th he gave up three hits and two runs to lose (2-2).

For William Paterson, senior righty Corey Martinez (River Edge, N.J.) threw 10.0 innings, striking out 10 against two walks while allowing one run and four hits over 115 pitches. Senior righty Eric Rosenberg (Paramus, N.J.) threw the final 4.0 innings to claim the win (5-2), striking out seven against two walks while allowing one run and two hits. The two Pioneer pitchers combined to striking out 17 while facing 51 total batters.

Junior left fielder Juan Pena (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) was the lone Gothic Knight with multiple hits, going 2-for-6 with one run and his 26th and 27th stolen bases of the season.

Junior third baseman Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J.) was 2-for-3 with one RBI and sophomore right fielder Danny Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) was 2-for-5. Sophomore center fielder Steven DiGirolamo (Dumont, N.J.) walked twice.

NJCU struck in the top of the first as Pena singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by senior second baseman Matt Corsi (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East). NJCU would not score again for 13 innings. The Pioneers tied it in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore catcher Steve Yelin (River Edge, N.J.) led off with a single, advanced on a pair of errors and scored on a sacrifice fly.

From there, both starters mowed through the lineups. Martinez set down 13 consecutive Knights from the third until the top of the eighth inning. Only a hit batter reached for WP from the fifth until the seventh and the Pioneers mustered just a lone single in the eighth and ninth innings. Each team stranded two runners in the 10th inning.

Still deadlocked in the 14th, sophomore Ryan Guthrie (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne), who entered as a defensive replacement at third base in the bottom of the 11th, led off with a walk, advanced to third on an error and scored the go-ahead run on a balk for a 2-1 lead. But in the bottom of the 14th, junior designated hitter Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J.) doubled with one out, Perez singled and when the ball was misplayed in left, Dorio scored the tying run on the error. After a two-out single and a five-pitch walk loaded the bases, DiGirolamo drew a four-pitch bases loaded walk to win the game.
