Winning Streak Hits Program Best 21 For No.1 Cougars

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Looking to continue their winning ways, the No. 1 ranked Concordia Chicago Baseball team took to the field this afternoon against the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons. The Cougars had their pitching and hitting clicking all afternoon, hitting seven homers on the day in route to a 13-1 and a 14-4 sweep of the Falcons. With the sweep the winning streak was extended to 21 games which breaks the program best which was set in 2014.

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • CUC hit seven homers on the day. Matt Fauth and Brody Mariotti hit two each.
  • Fauth and Bryan VanDuser both recorded for hits on the day.
  • Fauth and Mariotti each drove in five.
  • Adam Gregory picked up the win in game one working seven innings, allowing no runs on six hits while striking out six.
  • Cole Carman picked up his team leading fifth win of the year, working six inning and allowing three runs on seven hits.

 

GAME ONE: W, 13-1

CUC broke through with a single run in their opening at bat, by taking advantage of a CUW error after Brayden Benavides and VanDuser had reached.

 

The Cougars opened up some breathing room in the third. Fauth led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Two outs later a VanDuser single scored Fauth. Mariotti followed with a big fly to right center on a 2-2 pitch. His eighth homer of the year made it 4-0 CUC.

 

CUC made it 6-0 in the fourth. With one out Fauth homered to center field on a 1-1 pitch. After Jose Mercado was hit by a pitch and stole second, Benavides singled through the left side to score Mercado.

 

CUC added on in the sixth. With the bases loaded a VanDuser sac fly added a run. The Cougars then executed a perfect double steal to make it 8-0. CUC made it 9-0 in the seventh, scoring on a RBI groundout.

 

The Falcons got a single run back on a hit in the top of the eighth. CUC answered back in a big way in the bottom half. With the bases loaded Calle launched a line drive homer over the center field wall to put the finishing touches on the 13-1 game one win.

 

GAME TWO: W, 14-4

The Cougars scored first in the second inning. Two errors and two walks allowed CUC to plate two runs in the inning to take a 2-0 lead. CUC then made it 3-0 in the third when VanDuser launched a 2-1 pitch onto Division Street.

 

After CUW got a run back on two hits in the top of the fourth, CUC answered with two in the bottom half. With one on and one out Fauth launched a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for his second of the day, making it 5-1 CUC.

 

CUW got two back in the following inning with a two run shot to right center. As the Cougars have done all season they answered back in the fifth. CUC was able to work the count and draw four walks and got hit by a pitch once to plate two runs to extend the lead to 7-3.

 

The Cougars blew the game wide open in the sixth. With two on Mariotti drove a 1-0 pitch over the fence and onto the batting cages in right. His NACC leading ninth homer of the year made it 10-3 Cougars.

 

CUC put the final touches on the sweep in the sixth. A sac fly by Abelardo Paz Agueldo made it 11-3 Cougars. With two still on Mercado launched his third long ball of the season to extend the Cougar lead to 14-3.

 

Cade Laudenschlager threw the final inning, closing out the sweep of the Falcons.

 

The Cougars will be back in action either Monday or Tuesday against Lakeland game time will be determined by how the weather impacts Lakeland's field tomorrow. Check back tomorrow for updates.
