NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Mitchell College baseball team picked up its eighth-straight win on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Salve Regina University by a 13-6 final in non-conference action at Reynolds Field.
Four different pitchers contributed in the win, with reliever Drew Daley picking up the win on the strength of 3.2 scoreless innings of work. John-John Jose and Bryce Bedard also turned in strong outings out of the bullpen. The former allowed one run on three hits and struck out two while the latter retired five straight batters to close out the contest.
Dougie DelaCruz led the offense with three hits and drove in two runs while Sam Majewski, Anthony Diaz and Justin Johnson contributed two hits apiece. The Mariners finished with 13 hits in total, three of which went for doubles (DelaCruz, Johnson and Markus Melendez).
Mitchell jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning but gave the runs back in the second as Salve Regina rallied to tie the game. The score remained deadlocked until the sixth when the Mariners put up another five-spot and never trailed again. Eric Marriott had an RBI single in the frame while Steve Cochrane added a two-run single.
The Mariners tacked on single runs in each of the final three frames for added insurance, but the bullpen kept the Seahawks off the scoreboard save for a run in the eighth. Bedard struck out the final two Salve Regina batters in the eighth to strand a runner in scoring position, and he retired the side in order in the ninth as Mitchell improved to 22-6 on the year.
Mitchell will next host Nichols College on Wednesday, April 17 at 3:30 p.m.
