Powerful offense, strong pitching help W&J sweep Geneva

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson baseball team combined for 20 runs on 27 hits and added a pair of strong pitching performances Saturday afternoon to record a sweep of Geneva College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Ross Memorial Park. 
 
The sweep improves W&J to 17-1 in PAC play and 22-9 overall. The losses drop Geneva to 1-15 in league action and 6-20 overall. 
 
Game One Recap – W&J 12, Geneva 4
 
The Presidents bats picked up right where they left off after Thursday's win at Geneva. W&J scored early and often against the Golden Tornadoes in Saturday's opener. 
 
Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh) continued his hot stretch at the plate with an RBI single to score Josh Crummer (Great Falls, Va./Flint Hill School) in the bottom of the first. 
 
W&J tallied five runs on five hits in the bottom of the second. Mullen Socha (Independence, Ohio/St. Ignatius) tallied an RBI single before Crummer tacked on a two-run double and Moore knocked in two with a single to extend the lead to 6-0. 
 
In the third inning, James Artale (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) crushed a three-run home run over the left field fence to make the score 9-0. 
 
The Presidents added their final three runs in the fifth inning when Artale added an RBI double to score Shayne Erny(North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) and then Spencer Howell (Oakwood, Ohio/Oakwood) followed with a two-run double to make the score 12-0 Presidents. 
 
Geneva pushed three runs across the plate in the sixth before adding another in the seventh to make the final score 12-4. 
 
Santino Platt (Pittsburgh, Pa./OLSH) was strong on the mound for the Presidents, as the senior tossed 4.0 shutout innings to pick up the victory. Platt allowed three hits and struck out three as he improved his record to 4-3 on the season. Robby Heberle (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) recorded a scoreless inning of relief out of the bullpen. 
 
Artale finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored, while Crummer went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBI. Moore logged a 3-for-3 performance with three RBI while Erny collected two hits and two runs. 
 
Game Two Recap – W&J 8, Geneva 0 
Garrett Harstine (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia) was the story in the nightcap, as the senior tossed 6.0 scoreless innings to improve his record to 5-1 this season. Harstine allowed just one hit and struck out five during an efficient 72-pitch outing. 
 
After manufacturing a run each in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead, W&J struck for four runs on four hits in the fifth inning. A single by Michael Zito (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg) and a double by Socha put two runners into scoring position for the Presidents. 
 
Crummer then laced his PAC leading 17th double of the season down the left field line to plate Zito and Socha, extending the lead to 4-0. Later in the inning, an inside the park two-run home run by Howell made the score 6-0. 
 
Socha added a two-run double in the sixth to plate both Cole Reese (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) and Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./St. John's College) to push the lead to 8-0.
 
Henry Litman (Marietta, Ga./Walton), Mitchell Taufer (Washington, Pa./Bishop Canevin) and Clay Martin(Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) combined for 3.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. The trio allowed just one hit, while striking out four and walking none. 
 
Socha went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI in the nightcap. Crummer, Moore and Kalinski finished with two hits each during a 12 hit attack. 
 
W&J hosts Frostburg State for a non-conference game on Wednesday, April 24. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
