St. Louis, Mo., April 21, 2019 – The No. 16-ranked Washington University in St. Louis baseball team finished off a four-game sweep of Emory University with a 5-3 win Sunday afternoon at Kelly Field that secured head coach Pat Bloom's 500th career victory.
One day after clinching the 2019 University Athletic Association (UAA) title, WashU improved to 26-5-1 overall including a league leading 12-2 conference mark. The Eagles fell to 19-16 overall and 7-5 in UAA play.
Junior first baseman John Brinkman and sophomore Sean Robinson led the Bears with two hits apiece. Sophomore pitcher Troy Bauer earned the victory by holding Emory scoreless in 3.2 innings of relief as the Bears scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sophomore pitcher Dominick DiCosimo got the start and pitched a career-long 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two batters. Sophomore pitchers Tim Tague and Mitchell Black pitched the final three innings of the game with Black posting the first save of his career in a perfect 1.1 innings of relief.
The Eagles struck first in the opening frame of the game but Brinkman put the Bears back ahead in the bottom half with a two-run single to left field that scored freshman shortstop Caleb Durbin and senior second baseman Evan Nagel. However, Emory evened the score back up in the third inning on an infield single.
The score remained 2-2 until Robinson hit a sharp line drive double into the right centerfield gap that allowed just enough time for junior catcher Thomas Gardner to race around the bases and score from first. One batter later, Durbin hit a check swing double down the right field line which put the Bears ahead 4-2. Durbin added an insurance run in the eighth inning that also scored Robinson with a sacrifice fly.
Over the weekend the Bears secured their eighth UAA title in program history by clinching the top record in UAA play in addition to securing the 500th career victory of Pat Bloom. Bloom has a career-record of 500-222-1 (.692 winning percentage), including a 108-47-1 record with the Bears (.692 winning percentage).
Brinkman and Durbin led WashU with two runs batted in apiece while Robinson scored a team-high two runs. Bauer improved to 1-1 on the year with the win.
