Butler Beats CLU in Game 2

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental baseball team bounced back with a 6-4 win over Cal Lutheran in Game 2 of the series between the teams this weekend, and the first game of a doubleheader at Anderson Field on Saturday.

Oxy starter Tom Butler pitched very well, going seven innings with no earned runs, five strikeouts, four hits and four walks. Diego Ramirez came on with one out in the eighth to get the final five outs and earn the save.

Michael Ingram hit a sacrifice fly to score Oxy's first run in the bottom of the third, and then the Tigers rallied for three more runs in the fourth, going up 4-0. Jack Brancheau singled in a run, Antonio Andrade drove in the second with a sac fly and then Eamon McNeil capped the rally with an RBI-single.

Cal Lutheran took advantage of a pair of Oxy fielding errors in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2. Oxy second baseman Reid Gibbs got smoked in the chest by a ball that took a terrible hop and then Ingram bobbled a ball at short that would have been the final out. Despite a pair of walks on pitches close to the zone, Butler was able to get the Tigers out of the bases-loaded jam with a lazy fly ball to left.

Oxy answered immediately with runs five and six in the bottom half of the sixth. Gibbs singled in Ingram, and then Brancheau brought home Jake Fredrickson with a sac fly.

CLU got within two one more time in the eighth on an RBI-double by Cortez Espinoza before Ramirez came in to stop the bleeding and put the Kingsmen away.

Gibbs, who came into the game hitting .389 on the season, was all over the field offensively, bunting, running the bases and driving in runs. He finished the game 3 for 5 with a stolen base, a bunt single and an RBI.

McNeil also had a pair of hits, going 2 for 3, as did Fredrickson, who was 2 for 4 with a double a two runs.

Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 24-12 overall and 12-8 in SCIAC. Oxy is now one game back of Cal Lutheran for third place in the SCIAC.

The Kingsmen fall to 24-12 and 13-7.

Next Game: Oxy and CLU finish their series in the afternoon on Saturday.
