Keuka College Scores Four in Ninth; Wins in Extras

AURORA, N.Y. — The Keuka College Baseball team erased a four-run deficit in the ninth inning to extend the game and defeated Wells College 10-8 in 10 innings on Sunday to complete the North Eastern Athletic Conference sweep.

Tyler Key (Chico, Calif. / Gridley) threw three innings of one-hit relief to earn the win for Keuka College (21-13, 11-3 NEAC). Ryan Seales (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Saratoga Springs) drove in four runs on a pair of hits, including a triple to pace the offense. Anthony Mashewske (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) also had a pair of hits for the Wolves.

Keuka College 10 at Wells College 8

Wells College took the early 3-0 lead as the Express scored two in the first and added a run in the second inning. Keuka College responded in the third. Wells committed an error that allowed a run to score and could have ended the inning. Next up was Ryan Seales who hit his first career triple to score a pair of runs and tie the game. Tyler Broderick (State College, Pa. / Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy) followed with a double to score Seales and give the Wolves a 4-3 lead.

The advantage was short-lived as the Express scored five in the bottom of the third to take an 8-4 lead. The score would remain at 8-4 into the ninth inning.

A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases for Keuka in the ninth with one out. After Wells went to the bullpen and got a strikeout, Ryan Seales reached on a Wells error that could have ended the game, but allowed two runs to score. Pinch hitter James Griffin (Syracuse, N.Y. / East Syracuse-Minoa) doubled for the Wolves to score a run and cut the lead to one, 8-7. After a hit batter loaded the bases, Anthony Mashewkse reached on an infield single that scored a run and tied the game at 8-8.

In the bottom of the ninth, Tyler Key retired the Express 1-2-3 as the game went to extra innings.

Once again, a single and two walks loaded the bases with one out for the Wolves in the tenth inning. Ryan Seales provided the big hit for Keuka as he singled through the right side of the infield to score a pair of runs and give the Wolves a 10-8 lead. Key once again retired the Express in order in the bottom of the tenth, ending the game on a strikeout, as the Wolves defeated Wells College 10-8 on Sunday.

  • It was the 12th win away from home this season for the Wolves, setting a new program record
  • The Wolves also passed the 2018 team with 374 hits in a season, setting a new program record
  • Brooks Vertoske (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) was on base twice with two walks and scored twice, but had his career-best 12-game hitting streak snapped on Sunday. It tied for the fourth longest in Keuka College Baseball history

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves will take a quick break from North Eastern Athletic Conference play on Tuesday as they play a single game at Elmira College. Keuka College will then close the regular season against NEAC opponents at home on Kuhl Field. Keuka College will host SUNY Poly on Wednesday and Cazenovia College on Friday in a pair of nine-inning games. The Wolves will then close the regular season hosting a doubleheader against Cazenovia on Saturday.
