RADNOR, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy took game one of the 2019 Atlantic East Baseball Championship series in convincing fashion, winning 20-5 on Friday afternoon.

Nick Mulvey achieved a baseball rarity, knocking in seven runs on officially one hit. The seven RBIs were a career high as he was officially 1-for-3 at the plate. He added three sacrifice flies, which is a program single-game record, to go along with his grand slam in the second inning.

Nine of the team's 14 hits went for extra bases while the team took advantage of 10 Cavalier walks along with five errors to plate four unearned runs.

Justin Curtin was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, three walks, and a career-high four runs scored. Dave Tatoian added three RBI's, while Sachael Sciarretta scored three times and Ryan Keen added a solo home run.

Starter Nick DeRitis threw eight innings with four K's and five walks to improve to 6-1 on the season. He yielded just five runs on nine hits. Alex Kaupp finished the ninth to give Gwynedd the all-important first win in the best-of-three series.

Gwynedd jumped out early, as a two-run double from Tatoian and a sac fly from Tommy Nardini in the first staked GMercyU to a 3-0 lead. Mulvey made it 7-0 with his grand slam and later Keen's solo shot to add to the lead. Mulvey had his first sacrifice fly of the day in the third to make it 9-0.

Now leading 11-4 in the sixth, Jason Mulvey's two-run double was part of a five-run inning. The team added two runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings to help cement the outcome.

Brendan Van Belle went 3-for-5 with a run with teammate JD Barrett adding three RBIs.

Game two is set for tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the Griffins needing a win to capture the inaugural Atlantic East Championship. Should Cabrini prevail, a winner-take-all third game will happen shortly after.
